McGirt, who had been the first alternate for the tournament, posted on his Facebook page that he would take the place of Kevin Stadler, who had to withdraw. The reason for Stadler’s withdrawal wasn’t clear, but it appeared to be an illness.
McGirt wrote: “Hope my buddy Kevin Stadler gets to feeling better. He’s one of the best guys out here.”
The Fairmont native will be trying to make his 10th straight cut on the tour in his second appearance of the year. This past weekend he finished tied for 19th in the Sony Open, cashing a $69,025 check, which was the largest he has won on the tour.
McGirt is tied for 39th on the PGA money list, and is in 35th on the FedEx Cup standings.
McGirt is already in the field for the Farmers Insurance Open that begins Jan. 26 and the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am that begins Feb. 9.
The Humana Challenge has a purse of $5.6 million.
