LUMBERTON — Lumberton's boys soccer team made an early first-half goal from Bradley Burnette stand for the remainder of the contest Monday night against Hoke, capturing its first Southeastern Conference win of the season, 1-0.

Eleven minutes into the game, Jace Ward assisted Burnette on a shot just past the keeper. With the victory, the Pirates improve to 4-5, 1-1. The Bucks drop to 6-3, 0-1-1.

Swett girls golf finishes fourth

RAEFORD — The Purnell Swett High School girls golf team took a step back in Southeastern Conference play, following up last week’s third-place finish with a fourth-place showing in the second league meet of the season Monday at Bayonet Golf Course in Raeford.

“I tell the girls we got to come in at least third every week,” Swett head coach Jamie Locklear said. “We only had four girls today, which is tough, so every score counts.”

Led by medalist Gabby Weiss who shot a 70, Pinecrest took its second straight SEC meet with a commanding 305, as the Lady Patriots finished 66 strokes ahead of runner-up Scotland at 371. Hoke County was next in line with a 402, followed by Swett at 405, Lumberton at 438 and Richmond at 445. Jade Hunt paced Swett with an 88, followed by teammates Meredith Godwin with a 91, Tala Locklear with a 111 and Emily Chavis with a 113.

The next SEC girls meet takes place Monday at Pinecrest Country Club in Lumberton.
