RALEIGH — Former state Sen. David Weinstein recently received a resolution of appreciation from his alma mater, North Carolina State University, for his efforts to acquire funding for university projects during his years in the Senate.

The resolution was presented by Chancellor James H.. Woodward and Lawrence Davenport, chairman of the university’s board of trustees, during a trustees meeting on Nov. 20.

“This was unexpected. I knew nothing about it,” said Weinstein, who vacated his Senate seat Sept. 30 after being appointed by Gov. Beverly Perdue to head the Governor’s Highway Safety Program “It was a very nice honor.”

The resolution specifically recognized the former senator for sponsoring bills that brought to the university $1 million for the College of Agriculture; $69 million for Engineering Building 3; $38 million for the College of Veterinary Medicine; and $17 million for the planning and construction of the James B. Hunt Library.

Weinstein said that he is a very strong supporter of education and that during his 13 years in the Senate worked to obtain as much funding as possible for North Carolina State University, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and Robeson Community College.

“I was very fortunate to be in the position to see that all three of these schools got their fair share of the funds that were available,” he said. “I was just doing my job.”

Weinstein, who represented Robeson and Hoke counties in the Senate for 13 years, graduated from North Carolina State University in 1958. He has been an active member of the Wolfpack Club ever since.
