As we were preparing to share our opinion that the White House not make public photographs depicting a dead Osama bin Laden, President Obama announced that would not happen.
Good call, Mr. President, who said there was no need to “spike the football.”
We cheer the decision for a simple reason — it’s likely to be a life-saver. There is no way of knowing with certainty that people would die, but we have all witnessed the eagerness with which Islamic fundamentalists hit the street with Molotov cocktails and automatic weapons to protest any perceived offense toward their religion from the West. What their reaction would be to a photograph of a dead and disfigured bin Laden is a question that doesn’t need answering.
Besides, exactly what would be the point of displaying this head mount? To satisfy the latest group of truthers? There remain people who don’t believe airplanes brought down the Twin Towers even though it was captured live on video, and there are those who believe that President Obama’s long-form birth certificate that was released last week was a piece of art.
Some people will never be satisfied, which brings us to the Dunce of the Day, Cindy Sheehan, whose son’s tragic death in Iraq magically made her an expert on foreign policy. To illustrate the depth of her genius we will share her own words, offered in reaction to the “news” that bin Laden had been killed.
Said Sheehan: “I am sorry, but if you believe the newest death of OBL, you’re stupid. Just think to yourself — they paraded Saddam’s dead sons around to prove they were dead — why do you suppose they hastily buried this version of OBL at sea? This lying, murderous Empire can only exist with your brainwashed consent — just put your flags away and THINK!”
Someone certainly is brainwashed.
Does anyone believe that a release of the photographs by the White House would satisfy Sheehan and others of her stripe? They have heard of Photoshop.
So why, the skeptics ask, was bin Laden’s body so hastily deposited into the Indian Ocean? For reasons that the White House has offered, to honor Islam — and, yes, to mollify his followers — and to preclude the possibility of a shrine in his honor.
There is nothing to be gained from the release of the photos as he is dead either way. Some people will never be moved from their position, and satisfying those with a morbid curiosity for such things is a useless gesture.
The evidence that Osama bin Laden is burning will continue to mount incrementally, with each second, minute, hour, day, month, year and decade that passes without the murderer of more than 3,000 people reappearing.

The idea that releasing photos of Bin Laden's corpse would stir up terrorists is a joke. Guess what. They are already stirred up. They already hate America and Americans. They don't need any excuses. They certainly aren't going to take it easy on us because we were cool and didn't release the photos. They can't be reasoned with, so trying to appease them is a road to nowhere.
