LUMBERTON — Police have released a photograph of a man they say is responsible for a murder at a Lumberton car wash late last month.

William Devone McCormick, 20, is charged with first-degree murder, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, and second-degree kidnapping, according to Lumberton police Lt. Johnny Barnes. McCormick has other pending felony charges, but no known prior convictions, according to Barnes.

Gilbert Hunt, 26, of 331 Birch Road, was shot to death during an attempted robbery at a car wash on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive on the afternoon of Dec. 27, according to police. Brandon Hunt, 18, of Alamac Road, who was with Gilbert at the time, suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulder.

Barnes said that witness statements led to the charges against McCormick. Police are looking for a second gunman, but Barnes said that person has not been identified.

Police say that McCormick is believed to be in the Lumberton area. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information should call the Lumberton Police Department at (910) 671-3845.

I don't think that it is racial. I think that you would have to know this person to even think that it is towards race. I do think that he was wrong in his act, along with whoever else was with him. Taking someone elses life is wrong, he had a mother, a father, maybe even kids, sisters and brothers, you took this person away from their family and friends and I just think its messed up. You have to face the consequences in whatever action that you do. This is messed up.

This crime was MURDER. Setup, hate crime, racial crime, gang/drug related, the list can go on. It doesn't matter any of those. The fact is, Gilbert Hunt, but mostly known as Derek, was murdered. People can go on and on, but it is what it is.

He has family and friends that will miss him dearly. Brothers and sisters that won't be able to turn to him anymore. His life was taken, and who ever caused this needs to be punished. And if he was setup, that person needs to be punished also. I'm glad witnesses came forward and maybe the guy will be caught. Lets just hope the justice system don't let us down. Trust me I know...

To: ROSSisWrong Always:

I can hear your stand in all of this. I know your veiws by your statements (past and present) on certain communities, but there was nothing stated here which makes this a hate crime. It was a sensless, cowardly act of murder. It's not a case for Al Sharpton or Jesse, it's a case for community action. Sorry your views of certain people are twisted, but their will always be people like you in society. Throw the rock and hide.

I don't see this as a hate crime... I see it as a set up and a crime of opportunity. This man needs to be off the streets and whoever is harboring him should be charged too...

I want to thank all of you witnesses that took a stand against crime. "Barnes said that witness statements led to the charges against McCormick."

Because of you witnesses this criminal will hopefully be off our streets soon and justice will be served in this case. Way to go!!!
