RALEIGH (AP) — Republican Mitt Romney has a slight lead over President Barack Obama in North Carolina, according to a poll released on the eve of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.

The Elon University Poll found 47 percent of likely voters said they planned to pick Romney compared with 43 percent backing Obama. Six percent of likely voters said they were undecided, evenly split among the two candidates.

The poll found nearly half of the 1,089 sampled voters said the economy was the most important issue. Less than half of those surveyed said they were employed full-time; 17 percent said they were not employed.

The telephone survey was conducted over six days ending Thursday, when Romney gave his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention. The poll’s organizers said public attention of the convention gave Romney a small bump of support in the state.

The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.

In a sign of optimism, the poll also found most people were not very worried about losing their job and only 13 percent believed the economy would get worse in the next year. Thirty-seven percent believed it would get better.

North Carolina voters were more likely to see Romney as the better candidate to handle the economy; Obama was viewed as a better candidate to handle foreign affairs.

More than four out of 10 survey respondents said Romney’s choice of Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running mate made little difference to whether they would support the Republican ticket. Nearly three in 10 said the Ryan choice made them more likely to back the GOP duo.

Other polls also have pointed to a close presidential race this year for North Carolina’s 15 electoral votes.

In 2008, most polls showed a very tight race with results consistently so close neither Obama nor Republican presidential candidate John McCain could claim a lead. Obama reversed a Democratic Party losing streak in presidential elections since 1976 by capturing the state with a margin of fewer than 15,000 votes.

Democrats have an advantage with 43 percent of registered voters compared to 31 percent registered Republicans, however the number of independent voters is growing. North Carolina has 1.6 million unaffiliated voters now compared to 1.3 million at this time in 2008.

BBBD you said it. Barring some major catastrophe Romney has NC in the bag. He may have Robeson County in the bag because there are so many here supporting a man who says 47% of Americans are worthless pieces of crap. A man who now states gays have a right to have a family, a man who now states he wouldn't send all undocumented immigrants (illegal aliens) back to Mexico, who states he wouldn't repeal all of Obamacare, but he would change the name (is it the name he doesn't like or the policy). Sarah Palin would have been the candidate to choose. She has guts, and she says what she means. She doesn't waiver in her views. Now, you have Romney who stands for absolutely nothing, and views the Presidency as a position and not an opportunity to serve his fellow 53%. To all my Republican friends, be honest are you really proud of your candidate now? Yes, liberal media has taken the tape and ran with it, but, if Romney didn't say it there would be nothing to report.. In the words of Florida Evans of Good Times (who Romney would consider one of the 47%) although they were hardworking and didn't recieve assistance. Damn,Damn, Damn.

Romney has NC in the bag barring some catastrophe. The county breakdown will look just like it did for Amendment One. You'll see Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Charlotte, and Wilmington break for Obama, while the rest of the state will break for Romney. The polls depicting this race as close with Obama leading are just smoke and mirrors meant to discourage those likely to vote for Romney (or more accurately, against Obama).

A real man who flip-flops based on who he is talking to. If you put him in a room with gays, he would say it's ok they get married. If he's such the Chrisitan, he would be totally against homosexuality. The sin is the issue, the marriage is just formality. And last I check all have sin and come short. Lie (Sin), Racism (Sin), Hate (Sin), Homosexuality (Sin).

Question: Would you rather be in a room filled with Romney supporters... or in a room filled with Obama supporters?

Now apply that thought at the polls this November.. Thankyou.....

I figure Romney will be up a lot more than "slightly" when the votes are counted. The Democrats being for that same-sex marriage crap and Bevvie-Pooh saying North Carolina is "like Mississippi" is going to come home to roost.

Romney may say he's not for same sex marriage, but he isn't oppose to homosexuality as stated on Univision. If he says it's ok for two people of the same sex to love each other and have a family then it just as well be ok for them to marry. Not that I'm for marriage, but it appears your Romney isn't either. He should be speaking out against the act of homosexuality *sin*. But, he can't do that because he would have to address his (sin) of pride and lying.
