FAYETTEVILLE - Purnell Swett High's girls tennis team nailed down third place in the Two Rivers Conference with a 9-0 shutout over Cape Fear High in the regular-season finale on Monday.
Junior Cecille Jacobs led the Lady Rams with a win at No. 5 singles to nab the team's best record at 11-1 this season in conference play, 11-3 overall.
“It's really unbelievable what they've been able to accomplish,” said coach David Leek. “But knowing the time and effort they've put in the past couple of years, they really deserve it.”
Purnell Swett finished the regular season at 9-3 in conference play, trailing only Terry Sanford, 11-1, and Lumberton, 10-2.
No. 1 singles player Sarah Oxendine finished the regular season with a 7-5 record, while No. 2 singles player Whitney Jones was 9-3.
“These girls bought into the system and never questioned what we were doing,” Leek said. The bottom line is that they wanted to be successful and worked hard to obtain it.”
The Lady Rams will compete in the Two Rivers Conference Tournament starting on Wednesday.
Lady Pirates win again
The Lady Pirates of Lumberton High won their fifth straight Two Rivers Conference golf match on Monday - this one by 25 strokes over Terry Sanford and the rest of the field.
Kelci Walters led the way for Lumberton with another medalist honor after carding a 77. She was followed by Merideth Johnson with a 104, Krystale Hunt with a 107, Sara Grissom at 109, Kaitlyn Humphrey at 115 and Kristin Brady at 118.
The Lady Pirates lead the conference standings with a five-match total of 944. Terry Sanford is second at 1,065 and Pine Forest is third at 1,073.
