Puppy died because county officials didn’t respond when they were called

To the Editor,

Today my heart is very heavy and sad. Those of you who personally know me are aware that I have a deep love and care for animals.

My mother called me a few weeks ago and told me that her neighbor was abusing and neglecting their 6-month-old golden retriever. She called the Humane Society. They told her to call Animal Control. Animal Control told her it was the Sheriff Department’s responsibility, so I called them. They said it was Animal Control’s responsibility.

I was upset from my Mama and I being passed around so I got a little miffed and gave the male officer I spoke with a piece of my mind. He took my mother’s name and number and promised to call her and help resolve this issue. My mother never received a phone call.

She called me yesterday and told me the puppy was dead. I am so angry at this moment in my life that I understand why people take guns and blow people away. I would not do this, but I do understand. I am so tired of the bureaucracy and passing the buck by our government and state officials. I am fed up with the complacency in our world. It seems no one cares anymore. Children and animals do not have a voice and are the least protected in the world today.

We as human beings need to take a stand against this injustice. We are supposed to take care and protect animals and children. Instead many stand by and do nothing. Well, I am not that type of person. I have already begun the process to make sure accountability is met in the county this puppy lived in. I am working hard to make sure the sheriff in this particular county is not re-elected because evidently he and his staff are idiots and eat way too many doughnuts to do anything constructive.

I will make sure I find out who is responsible for handling matters such as this. And the lesson I have learned is … I will take matters in my own hands in the future as I should have done this time. I will rescue the animal myself and find a loving home that will give them a good life. If our officials that we pay with our good hard-earned tax money won’t do the job, than I will.

Jo Jo, I am so sorry about the loss of the little puppy - this is so typical of how too many feel about our voiceless/helpless animals - they consider them nothing more than property/trash and care not - they refuse to accept the fact these animals were placed on earth for we humans to care for and be assured those who abuse them, will pay the price. People such as David Edge, who is in a position to help our animals, does nothing but add more insult and helps people abuse, neglect and mistreat our animals due to his ignorance. Certainly the children need to be cared for but at least they do have a voice and stand a much better chance of being protected than our animals - it seems to me the answer to how many children are in need is to have mandatory spay/neuter to the men and women who constantly have more children than they can care for and most of the time they do so in order to be paid ADC from our "tax dollars"; seems David Edge should do something about that rather than complaining about allowing three trucks to be equipped with temperature control (required by the State)! I will once again quote someone who did care:

"The greatness of a Nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated" - Gandhi

As you know, the so called officials eliminated the Animal Cruelty investigators .. they need to eliminate some other things they waste our tax dollars on - such as a "retreat" -- what's wrong with the "closed door sessions" - I resent paying for them to go on retreats and it is a waste of our tax dollars - I'm certain when it's out of town, they are allowed to take their whole family with them at tax payer's expense.

I could not agree with you more! Animals should be cared for properly if you claim to own it. They are your responsibility and they look to you for love and attention along with food and water. As for children, we have too many in this county that are being abused and neglected but there is a way to be a voice for these children. If you are appalled at the way children are treated and you want to help, call the office of the Guardian ad Litum at (910) 671-3077 and ask about becoming a volunteer. You can be the voice for one of these children in court and take a stand against their abuse. Don't let another child go to bed tonight thinking that noone cares about them. Call and volunteer,.
