LAKE WACCAMAW — Red Springs coach George Coltharp has praised junior tailback Jedarian Lesane all season.

On Friday during a battle for first place at East Columbus, Lesane delivered.

Fueled by a career-high 236 yards and two touchdowns, the Red Devils held on to beat the Gators 19-16 and control their own destiny the rest of the way toward a Three Rivers championship.

Red Springs (5-3, 2-0) piled up nearly 500 yards of total offense against one of the state’s better 1A defenses and forced three turnovers to make a three-point lead stand down the stretch. Blake Greene completed 10-of-15 passes for 216 yards and a touchdown, the scoring toss going to Zach Jones.

Penalties plague Fairmont in loss

FAIRMONT — Fairmont was flagged for 155 penalty yards in a 32-30 Three Rivers Conference loss to West Columbus Friday night at Hal S. Floyd Stadium.

The Golden Tornadoes (4-4, 1-1) led 30-24 after three quarters before giving up the game-winning go-ahead score to West Columbus (4-4, 1-1) in the fourth. The Vikings converted all of their two-point conversions while Fairmont went 0-for-5 on its attempts.

Fairmont quarterback Jarrod Neal suffered a high ankle sprain in the first half, but returned in the second half and finished the game out.

“He could barely walk,” Fairmont head coach James Atkinson said. “I think he’s about 50-50 … We’ll know for sure by about Tuesday or Wednesday if he can play next week.”
