FAIRMONT — The town of Fairmont is teaming up with a civic-minded college student to provide relief to areas affected by the recent tornadoes.
Ariel Campbell, a freshman at Robeson Community College, contacted city officials to begin a drive to collect items to help families in need. She will be at the Fairmont Fire Hall to collect items from 3 to 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, at those times on Wednesdays and Sundays throughout May.
“I think it’s a good idea because if the tornado would have hit right here, we would have been looking for someone to help us,” Campbell said.
“Two of the best ideas that we’ve had in Fairmont in the last month or two have come from people outside this building,” said Charles Kemp, the mayor of Fairmont. “The little girl Katelyn Bass came forward with the idea about recycling and now this woman and her idea for the drive. I think it’s such an unselfish and humanitarian desire on her part to improve the lives of people who have been devastated.”
Items being collecting include canned food, rice, cereal, bottled water, Oodles of Noodles, Chewing gum, toothbrushes, mouthwash, toothpaste, face cloths, new socks, deodorant, lotion, razors, combs and soap. Campbell will deliver the goods to the American Red Cross after the drive is over, and that agency will distribute them to those in need.
“The town is honored to partner with Ariel in her very unselfish plan to help the many displaced and traumatized by these devastating storms,” Kemp said.
Campbell is the daughter of Coretta Brockington and William Campbell of Fairmont.
