PINEHURST — In cold and blustery conditions, Purnell Swett High School freshman Meredith Godwin and senior Jade Hunt each shot a 107 during the second and final round of the NCHSAA 4A championships Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 6.

“The conditions were very tough, windy, cold, and (Pinehurst) No. 6 is a tough golf course,” Swett head coach Jamie Locklear said.

One of only a handful of freshmen competing at state, Godwin carded a 99 during Monday’s first round to finish with a 206 total.

Hunt, who shaved a stroke off of her 108 on Monday, finished with a 215.

“Meredith, she got a chance to taste the state championships as a freshman,” Locklear said. “It was a learning experience for her. Right now, I’m going to see how hard she’ll work to get better. We’ll see what kind of work ethic she uses now.”

Meanwhile, the senior Hunt wraps up her three-year career on the links for Purnell Swett with a state finals appearance under her belt — exactly what she hoped for in her final campaign with the Lady Rams.

“She had a great season just making it there (to state),” Locklear said. “That was her goal and she accomplished that. She’s a great kid, I hate losing her. I’m proud of her for what she’s done.”

Locklear went on to mention that next year Hunt may pursue a collegiate career playing women’s golf at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg or Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst.

Individually in the 4A finals, Athens Drive’s Sarah Bae claimed first place after edging Ashley Osiecki of New Bern in a play-off. Tied atop the leaderboard with 152s, Bae and Osiecki played hole No. 18 twice before the winner was decided. Bae won with a birdie on the second play-off hole.

Pinecrest’s Gabby Weiss tied for fifth with a 157.

Ardrey Kell won the team championship with a 490. Pinecrest took second with a 501, followed by Green Hope at 504, Reagan at 508 and New Bern at 529.
