Taxpayers pay for so many
people ‘working the system’

To the Editor,

As most people in North Carolina know, as well as the citizens of Robeson County, this county is not only the poorest county in North Carolina, but is also known as the most negative. This is due to having many people who don’t seem to care about how they contribute to this negative impression. They also pass their ignorance/non-caring from one generation to another.

A perfect example of the non-caring attitude is how some people decorate their porches/houses for a holiday and leave their decorations up long after the holiday is gone; it is a perfect example of the care-not attitude and is very unfortunate. This seems to occur in many areas of our county and certainly in the neighborhood I live in; fortunately, most of the people abide by a sense of caring about the neighborhood but, as the saying goes, there is at least one bad apple in the barrell.

The other problem we have in this county are couples living together, not married, having children and expecting our tax payers to take care of their children. I have been told by quite a few people that this is what is meant when people say “some people know how to work the system.” This is apparently another example of negative behavior being passed from generation to generation. So sad but true.

It is my understanding there is only one person at Department of Social Services who handles this abuse and if this is the case, there is no way one person can investigate the number of people who are abusing the system and we pay the price. Hopefully in time all this will end and Robeson County can be known as a positive county rather than negative.

It is long over due.

I just wondering as I was reading this letter, I agree that there's a problem but my question to you would be. How do you compare leaving Christmas lights on the porch and shacking I just don't get it. I really don't think leaving your lights on the porch is really a sin, but now shacking that's a different story.

I wasn't "comparing" to leaving "Christmas lights" on the porch and shacking" -- I was simply using "two" examples of what some people do which contributes to the very negative opinion so many people have of Robeson County - I was not referring to "Christmas" - I didn't even mention which decorations but I was referring to Halloween decorations which had been left up in my neighborhood three and a half weeks AFTER Halloween; as far as "shacking up - I was referring to couples who live together, NOT married, have children and "EXPECT" the taxpayers to pay for their children - in case you don't know -- it's called "ADC" - "AID TO DEPENDANT CHILDREN" - couples live together, have children and then apply for "assistance" even though one or both of them are employed -- surely you must be aware this is one of the "ways" so many women (and men) take advantage of our tax dollars - there are also many "couples" who live together, claim not to be married in order to do the same -- I know of quite a few people who do this - it is a well known fact.

Hopefully you will "re-read" my comments and understand this time - ALL my comments were made as an "example" of WHY Robeson County has such a negative reputation. Hopefully you will understand this time - if not, maybe you can contact DSS and inquire as to how much taxpayer's money is spent on ADC annually, as well as the other issues - also, you might want to re-read my letter re "decorations" -- to my knowledge, Christmas was NOT mentioned - you "proved" my point.

Happy Thanksgiving,
