LUMBERTON — Two teenagers have been charged with the shooting death of a South Carolina man at Turner Terrace — the first of two murders at the public housing complex in consecutive weekends.
Antonio Lamar Hawkins, 19, of 2006 Hazewood St., has been arrested for the first-degree murder of 28-year-old Lavel Wheeler, of Latta, S.C., on June 20. He is in the county jail being held without bond. A warrant has been issued charging 17-year-old Harrison Tisdale, of 267 Jordan Drive, with first-degree murder. Each is also accused of discharging a weapon into an occupied property, the vehicle that Wheeler was driving.
Lt. Johnny Barnes said that officers arrested Hawkins at his home at about 10 p.m. Wednesday. Barnes said that police were led to the suspects following interviews with the public.
“There really is not a motive,” Barnes said. “It’s just stupidity.”
Witnesses said that at about 11 p.m. a group of young men who were at the corner of Holly and Spruce streets began shooting at a caravan of vehicles that had participated earlier that evening in a custom car show at the Robeson County Fairgrounds.
Wheeler was struck, forcing a passenger in the vehicle to drive the vehicle to the KFC parking lot to wait for an ambulance. Wheeler died at Southeastern Regional Medical Center a short time later.
Hawkins was arrested in 2006 for disorderly conduct. His MySpace page is set to private but prominent gang symbols — two pitchforks, usually aligned with Crip and Folk sets — are displayed on his homepage.
Barnes said investigators are still searching for the gunman who took the life of a Fayetteville man on Saturday in the second murder at Turner Terrace.
Dwight Jordan, 37, was shot in a parking lot on the 200 block of Spruce Street at about 11:30 p.m. When police arrived, they found Jordan lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to his mid-section. Jordan was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, where he died.
This week, Councilman John Cantey made a public plea for people with information about either or both of the murders to contact police. Hawkins’ arrest came the day after Cantey made the plea in an article published in The Robesonian on Wednesday.
Chief Michael McNeill said Friday that residents in Turner Terrace will be seeing police in the area more often.
“We have beefed up patrol after the last shooting,” McNeill said. “We’re trying to make the community safer.”
He said residents have frequently complained about gunshots in the neighborhood.
“You know, a bullet doesn’t have a name,” he said. “We don’t want adults to get hurt, but we certainly don’t want these children to.”
McNeill said he hopes the extra patrol will allow officers “to get to know residents, and for the residents to get to know officers,” so that people will feel more comfortable coming forward with information about crimes.
Anyone with information about either murder should call the Lumberton Police Department at (910) 671-3845. Callers can remain anonymous.
It is obvious that you and Tisdale are related or in the same gang. You seem to be the missing piece to the puzzle to clear his name so why don't you go help him out instead of trying to convince us of his innocence. Tisdale's myspace page reveals who he really is. He is a wanna be gangsta and if this didn't jam him up then something else would have. He shot an innocent person because he was jealous of the car that he drove. A car that the young man probably worked hard to purchase and fix up. Tisdale had the same options, but instead he would rather stand on a street corner day in and day out to try and make his money. And the sad part about it is he was raised in good family but made bad choices.
to my word
tisdale was arrested two weeks ago for stealing a car from club in motion. he also had a pistol with him. it is all public record all you have to do is go to the court house. and to thetrueisallthatmatters if you have information that may clear Mr. Tisdale of this crime contact the police and give them the information since your so sure he did not do it.one more question why has Mr. Tisdale not turned himself in? if not guilty surly he would like to get his name cleared up.and to the Lumberton Police Department thank you.
When someone alledgedly commits an offense his/her name and last known address is published. Let's not try to pretend that Tisdale was a young man who was doing positive things. Then let's look at the picture. Both of these young men in the paper wearing black tees (coincedence I guess). I have seen Tisdale standing on the street corner day in and day out. Involved in gang activity and everything else under the son. If he didn't do this then when freed he will eventually do something unless he makes some serious changes. If you know someone is doing illegal things and you allow them to live under your roof then chances are your address will someday be published in the paper.
