The inaugural Robeson County Homebuilders Association Swing for Charity golf tournament on Thursday at Pinecrest Country Club raised more than $2,500 that will benefit a man who suffered severe injuries in an ATV accident.

The money will help the association build a handicap-accessible bed and bathroom to the home of Brian Haymore. Haymore was able to attend the event.

The team of Stuart Monroe, Baxter Canady, Babe Lawson and Robert Lawson shot a 14-under-par 58 to take the $400 first place prize. Four teams tied for second place, with the team of George Allen, Dosey Chavis, Dean Brown and Bruce Davis winning a card playoff and the $300 cash prize. Third place went to the team of Gerald Strickland, Carlton Dial, Lemark Harris and Warner Hall, who all shared a $200 cash prize.

Closest-to-the-pin prizes went to David Goins on No. 2, George Allen on No. 7, Dosey Chavis on No. 10 and David Lowery on No. 12. Jimmy Stone had the straightest drive on No. 8 and David Lowery had the longest drive on No. 18.

Bruce Davis and Bobby Meares were co-chairmen of the event.

A $1,000 cash prize waits each of the first place teams in the second annual Angel Elite Sports Golf Tournament that is scheduled for Aug. 6. The tournament uses a three-man captain's choice format. Plans are for two flights, with the winning teams each taking the $1,000 top prize and the runner-up teams each winning $255.

Lunch will be at 11:30 p.m., with a shotgun start at noon.

The registration is $85 person, $255 for a team. Entry forms can be picked up at Pinecrest Country Club or by visiting www.angelelitesports.com. For information, call Abdul Ghaffar at (910) 671-7827. The entry deadline is Aug. 4. Lumberton High golfer Ryan Bass shot a 74 on Monday to win last week s Robeson County Junior Golf Tour event in the 14-and-over Division, beating James Chavis and Austin Locklear, who tied for second place with an 82. Chavis won a chip-off to take solo second.

Mac Kenney s 48 on nine holes took first place in the 10-to-13 Division, and Hunter Elkins 58 took first in the 10-and-under Division.

A couple of the more experienced golfers at Pinecrest CC had something to brag about after playing on Wednesday.

Charlie Kinlaw, who is 79 years old and has bettered his age on the golf course more times than even a young man can remember, not only shot his age, he exploded it, shooting a 1-under-par 71 from the gold tees.

And George Allen, whose age is even par, bettered his years on Earth by 5 strokes, shooting a 67 from the gold tees. George says it s the 56th straight year he has shot better than 70. And we believe him.
