Tribal Council only hurting efforts for tribal recognition

To the Editor,

Well, it looks like the children on the Tribal Council are at it again. I am referring to the article in The Robesonian on March 6 about the Lumbee Tribal Council turning down Chairman Paul Brooks’ nomination of Steven Hunt for the position of tribal administrator. When Mr. Brooks first announced that he chose Mr. Hunt for the position of tribal administrator, I would have bet $100 that the Tribal Council would not vote him in, not because they feel that Mr. Hunt couldn’t do the job, but because they just don’t like Mr. Brooks.

Washington must be laughing their butts off at the Lumbee Tribal Council. No way would they give the Lumbee tribe recognition when the Ttribal Council can’t even get along with their tribal chairman. I sure wouldn’t vote for them.

Doesn’t the Tribal Council realize that they are only hurting the Lumbee people by acting like a bunch of spoiled brats? Chairman Brooks gave a statement through spokesman Alex Baker. My question is, if we have a tribal spokeperson, why do we also need a tribal speaker? Think about that.

Ok first things first, my father was a "Lumbee" (I don't believe in that name), his parents left Robeson County before he was born and he, his three brothers and me and all my cousins are absolutely disgusted with the conduct of our kin in North Carolina. The name "Lumbee" is not even a real tribal designation, it was made up by some people from the group a long time ago just so they would have something to call themselves. I can understand why the "Lumbees" are so confused about their heritage because they've been taught they are Indian all their lives. My grandmother, a "Lumbee" born and raised in Robeson County, has admitted to me that ever since she left home all those years ago she has come to the conclusion, after meeting genuine Native Americans, such as the Navajo, that the "Lumbees" are about the farthest thing from real Indigenous people that one will come across. She has also remarked on how she has realized that the family probably is mostly African American, something she doesn't like to talk about but has confirmed. I really wish our relatives in Robeson County would just give up this quest to become real Indians and just accept who they are, TRI-RACIAL people. No one is going to deny that "Lumbees" are at least partially Indian but that amount of blood is incredibly small in comparison with the White and African blood in them which comprises over 80% of their DNA, and scientific tests fully back me up on this. I wouldn't at all object to them identifying somewhat with their Native heritage but to deny the other two, much larger, components of their heritage is false. Furthermore, the powwows and events the Lumbees hold trying to imitate real Indians are pathetic and for them to claim to be real Indians based on these practices verges on the farcical. I wish they could just be honest and identify as what they really are, AFRICAN AMERICANS. But sadly I don't think that day will ever come, thank God though my family was lucky enough to get away from all of it. Good luck "Lumbees" YOUR GONNA NEED IT.

QUESTION: Since everyone has to pay a fee for an ID card. Doesn't that make us members of a CLUB? After all, who in their right mind is going to do what the Tribal Government says anyhow. We do what the US says and the LTG.

yeah i agree McMillan stated over 100 years ago that this group had no indian customs,no indian names and Not even a word of indian language and he was a supporter that for political votes wanted these croatans to be recognized.

at a cost of well over $800 million at the group current membership(actualy they should be called a club)not a tribe since they never been sovereign or a real ruling government, name one lumbee croatan ancestor that had a lumbee council law put on him that was legally enforceable, they are a club, a non-profit ,not a tribe.

real Indian nations are very exacting about their heritage and don't change it based on the political mood(the lumbee tried to be enrolled as Cherokee for 40 years)

and now they swear to saraw heritage after swearing in 1900 to be the Croatan lost colony descendants of their own free will with a signed petition before congress with their names on it!

JNO. H. OBERLY, Commissioner

DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR,

OFFICE OF INDIAN AFFAIRS

Washington, September 19, 1914

latter part of 1888.About that time 54 of these people, describing themselves as"a part of the Croatan Indians living in Robeson County,"and claiming to be"a remnant of White's lost colony,"petitioned Congress"for such aid as you may see fit to extend to us."

OF course...this the same group ancestors that tried to steal the identity and be recognized as Cherokee Indians for 40 years bfore Congress with 4 bills after a Croatan identity failed ! they are always doing something crooked

1.PETITION OF CROATAN INDIANS.. To the Congress of the United States,December 1887. For recognition as "Croatan Indians"with a sign sworn petition as "Croatans".Robeson County signers

"The undersigned, your petitioners,a part of the Croatan Indians..Swear Descent from the Lost Colony of Roanoke" The Bill did not pass.

2. 1910 (January 24).Introduction of a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives to change the tribe's name from Croatan to Cherokee. The bill did not pass.

3. 1913 (July 10).Introduction of a bill in the U.S.Senate to change the tribe's name from Indians of Robeson County to Cherokee Indians of Robeson County. The bill did not pass.

4. 1924 (March 20).Introduction of a bill in the U.S. House to change the tribal name to Cherokee. The bill did not pass.

5. 1932 (May 9).A bill was introduced in the U.S.Senate to Recognized and Enrolled the tribe as Cherokee Indians. The bill did not pass

I don't see how anyone could trust the lumbees research now as saraw too or any real tribe!

The lumbee(?) bloodline is watered down and un-provable. No history, no language, nothing passed down from generation to generation.

Out of 55 thousand members, you'd think one, just one would have some sorta info or special language skills that were passed on. What the lumbee's are doing is just copying the Cherokee's or some other tribe or something they've seen on TV so they can look authentic. All other tribes in the USA are against recognition for lumbee's. They know what they had to go thru and the lumbees stayed right here and didn't have to go anywhere.

I have a lot more info and facts on this, my favorite subject, but Donnie wont show it here, so I wont wasts my time typing it. But you better believe I could hurt some feelings with what I know... The truth.

The Tribal Council decision was not against Chairman Brooks. The decision was against giving a person with no experience with HUD policies and little experience managing a large organization.

Plus Mr. Hunt was looking for more than $125,000 to do the job. There is a reason they call it public service. Tell me Terry, what would you pay someone with experience $175,000??

Easy to do when its not "your money"...
