RALEIGH — Barnhill Contracting Co. of Tarboro has been awarded a $2.4 million contract to resurface a 10.9-mile section of U.S. 74 from N.C. 41 to the Columbus County line in Robeson County.

The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded the contract in December. Work can begin as early as Jan. 28 with a completion date of May 31.

The project involves resurfacing the eastbound lanes. Westbound lanes were resurfaced in an earlier project.

It is one of 23 contracts totaling $145.7 million awarded by the Transportation Department in December for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. The contracts went the lowest bidders as is required by state law. The bids that were awarded came in at about 9.8 percent, or $15.8 million, below the department’s estimates.
