PEMBROKE — If you want to lend a hand and be a part of a Guinness Book world record attempt, then you are invited Wednesday to The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

A record attempt, which is part of the university’s ongoing 125th anniversary, will be made at the Grace P. Johnson Stadium at about 5:30 p.m., when it is hoped that almost 1,900 people will join hands. Registration for participants will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend the event.

The current record for the longest handshake relay is 1,168 people. It was achieved at an event organized by the JP Taravella High School DECA Club in Coral Springs, Fla., on Dec. 16, 2011, to encourage interaction between special-needs students and the rest of the school’s student body.

UNCP’s goal is 1,887 — a number chosen because the university was established in 1887.

Participants might be required to stand for about an hour and 30 minutes; they may bring canvas folding chairs. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent. A group photo of participants will be made available online after the record attempt.

Anyone wishing to participate is asked to wear UNCP’s colors, black and gold, and Heritage T-shirts. Spectators can watch the history-making event from the stands. The event will take place rain or shine, but not if there is lightning or thunderstorms. There will be music, games and other entertainment.
