Wednesday's Prep Roundup: Pirates hand Raiders first loss

LUMBERTON — The Lumberton boys soccer team flexed their offense Wednesday night, scoring three unanswered goals in the second half en route to a 5-1 Southeastern Conference victory over Richmond County at Alton G. Brooks Stadium.

“Huge win for us, they came in undefeated,” Lumberton head coach Kenny Simmons said. “It was probably the most complete game we’ve played all year.”

Lumberton (5-5, 2-1) led 2-0 at halftime thanks to goals from Barusch Franko and Miguel Bello. After Armando Garcia scored for the Raiders (7-1-2, 1-1-1) to trim the deficit to one, the Pirates responded with their three-goal onslaught. Colby Johnson scored a pair and Franko netted his second goal of the game to cap the Pirates’ offensive outburst. Bello added a game-high three assists.

Lady Mustangs spike East Columbus

ROWLAND — The South Robeson High School volleyball team remains undefeated in the Three Rivers Conference with a 3-0 shutout victory over East Columbus on Wednesday night.

The Lady Mustangs (10-3, 5-0) cruised to a league win in scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-15. The South Robeson JV won 2-1.

Swett takes 3rd at SEC tri-meet

LUMBERTON — The Purnell Swett High School girls and boys cross country teams each finished third in the three-school Southeastern Conference meet Wednesday afternoon at Luther Britt Park. The Swett boys’ third-place showing came with a score of 71 points, trailing first-place Pinecrest with 15 and runner-up Richmond with 55 points.

On the girls’ side, the third-place Lady Rams finished with 100 points. Pinecrest took the top spot with 15, followed by Richmond with 60. The
