Wednesday's Roundup: Ray's homer gives Rams 8-7 win

PEMBROKE — Brad Ray’s solo home run in the bottom of the seventh off of Jordan Cummings gave Purnell Swett an 8-7 victory over Hoke Wednesday night, giving the Rams their second SEC win of the week.

Torien Locklear picked up the win in relief for Swett after retiring two of the three batters he faced in the top of the seventh inning. Chase Armstrong had two hits and two RBIs for the Rams. 

Locklear tosses gem in 10-0 victory

PEMBROKE — Alexis Locklear hurled six innings of one-hit ball Wednesday night, helping Purnell Swett shut out Hoke, 10-0.

Teammate and fellow hurler Josey Oxendine made her presence felt from the plate, contributing four hits and an RBI. The Rams host Scotland Friday.

Skipper subdues Pine Forest

LUMBERTON — Lumberton pitcher Meagan Skipper silenced the Pine Forest lineup over seven innings Wednesday, earning a complete game decision in a 4-1 non-conference win over the visiting Trojans.

Skipper allowed one hit and an unearned run in the fourth inning.

Senior Brittany Bruce, Joy Church and Paige Strickland each recorded two hits for the Pirates who improved to 5-4 on the season with the non-conference victory.

Lumberton is back in action Friday hosting Pinecrest.

East Columbus beats Mustangs, 14-2

ROWLAND — Unbeaten East Columbus handed South Robeson’s softball team its third loss of the season Wednesday afternoon, downing the Mustangs 14-2 with a pair of home runs.

The Gators scored five runs in the fifth and sixth inning to close the contest before the final inning. Shanita Hampton homered and drove in four runs for East Columbus (6-0) while Tawanaka Hunt knocked in one of South Robeson’s (9-3) two runs with an RBI single.

South Robeson hosts St. Pauls Friday in a Three Rivers Conference game.

Red Springs blanks South Robeson

RED SPRINGS — Red Springs’ boys tennis team swept through singles matches Wednesday afternoon, cruising to a 9-0 victory over South Robeson.
