LUMBERTON — A Fairmont woman has received a suspended sentence for setting a fire that destroyed her own home in July 2011, according to sheriff’s Lt. Brian Duckworth.

Wenona Lynn Chavis, 37, of Peanut Drive, pleaded guilty Wednesday to felony burning certain buildings for setting a July 19, 2011, fire that destroyed her mobile home at 35 Wiggins Road, according to Duckworth.

Chavis was given a suspended sentence of six to eight months, according to Duckworth, and she will be on probation for five years. She was also ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.

Chavis and her ex-husband, who had been sent to prison, had a dispute over the property on Wiggins Road that was settled in court, according to a previous article in The Robesonian. The court awarded Chavis the home and her ex-husband the land, and the judge gave her 30 days to move the home from the land.

Instead, she burned it. Before burning the home, she gutted the home, removing doors, cabinets, sinks, toilets, vinyl siding and other items of value, the report said.

Chavis was also ordered to pay $36,200 in restitution to Bank of America, which held the mortgage, according to Duckworth.

Assistant District Attorney Allan Adams prosecuted the case.

@Golfman60: Thanks for pointing that out. That's even better!!!! If the sorry BANK owned it, that's even more reason NOT TO CARE IN THE LEAST. Way to go, Wenona! Anytime you beat a bank or the government out of ONE THIN DIME, you've done a good day's work.

It is hard to believe that someone burns their own home & spends no time in prison!!! What in the world is going on?

Thats just like the teens who were burning others property & were out on such low bonds! If it were my son, he would have been under a $50000 bond! I think there really needs to be some jusification of low & high bonds. Not leaving it up to certain people who hold grudges or are friends with member of the DAs office or the magistrate!

Looks like the fool caught her hair on fire too. But, considering all, IF it was HER own home, and she DID'NT scam the insurance company, WHO CARES?

Read the WHOLE article Percy. It was not her home. It was the bank's. I'll bet you lunch that the restitution paid will be less than 20 cents on the dollar.
