To the Editor,
The American Cancer Society’s Robeson Relay for Life for 2010 has begun. This 24-hour, fun- filled event, held annually in the spring at Lumberton High School, is the culmination of lots of hours of work by almost 2,800 volunteers.
This 24-hour event does not just happen with a little preparation a few weeks prior to the event. The Relay Committee, a group of 40 men and women from all areas of Robeson County, began working on the 2010 Relay in July. The committee recruits and trains teams who through various means raise money to be donated to the American Cancer Society for research, education, advocacy, and service. On the day of the relay, these teams, 78 in 2009, with over 2,800 team members, will assemble team tents around the track at the high school, where they will walk laps, cook, dance, sell items for their teams, and spend the night. The relay will officially begin when the cancer survivors take the first lap, followed by their caregivers, and then all the team members. Everyone will be “celebrating” with relayers walking around the track, “remembering” through the luminary service those who have been touched by cancer and “fighting back” by donating funds to help find an end to this horrible disease.
If you wish to become a member of this very elite group of volunteers, visit the relay’s Web site, relayforlife.org/robesonnc, and join up. There may be some hard work involved, and there will be some tears shed, but the Relay Committee will promise you that your heart will be greatly touched.
On behalf of our 2,800 team members, the Robeson Relay for Life Committee invites you to Lumberton Senior High School track on April 23 and 24, 2010.
