MAXTON — A teenage firefighter was severely injured on Friday and a tanker truck was destroyed when the vehicle wrecked while responding to a structure fire, according to the state Highway Patrol.

According to Trooper D.B. Strickland, Quintin Thompson, 18, of Red Hill Road, Maxton, was paralyzed from the waist down and was at UNC Hospitals on Sunday. The driver of the tanker truck, Ronald McDaniel, 19, of 208 S. Patterson St., Maxton, suffered “minor injuries,’’ according to Strickland, and was at Scotland Memorial Hospital on Sunday.

They were injured when the Queheel Volunteer Fire Department tanker truck wrecked on N.C. 130 about 300 yards south of the Maxton town limits, Strickland said. He said the tanker truck ran off the right side of the road, McDaniel overcorrected, and the vehicle rolled one and half times, coming to rest on the driver’s side, trapping McDaniel and Thompson inside.

The top of the vehicle had to be cut off to free them, according to Strickland.

Strickland said the vehicle was traveling about 65 mph in a 55-mph zone. He does not anticipate that any charges will be filed.

The vehicle, which was worth about $200,000, was destroyed. The accident happened about 3:50 p.m.

The bottom line is that we should all b thankful for these two gents being alive. This is not the time or the place to b asking technical questions, or fussing and arguing. If we were not there, then we don't kno what happened. Maybe it will b revealed as to what caused the accident, or maybe it won't, but as I stated in the beginning, we should all just b thankful that we serve an awsome GOD, and he saw fit to leave both of these young men here. That let's me know that the Lord has work for them to do.

To Shanita10: Im glad Mr. Thompson is showing signs of recovery! God bless him!! But... How DARE u say.... "It really doesn't matter what caused that accident"!!! Try telling that 2 the insurance company!!! I would hate 2 think that your point of view (it's just a accident and doesn't matter what caused the accident) is the view of the station that u r so proudly representing and or defending.

To: Shi Prince or whoeva!..it really doesnt mata what caused the ACCIDENT..all we are worried about is the boys..as long as their alive..so end of discussion let our station handle this..wow its really a shock 2 me how every1 is putting us down..geez its really erkn mi nerves..&& unless u have visited quinton thompson in chapel hill u kno nothing! weve been up der && he's moving around a lil and talking..and showing signs of feelings in his body..wow were not claiming that he's paralyzed..with GOD all things are possible..so let us handle it!..btw who r u??

To Shanita10: An accident is a accident...But no accident happens without cause! Meaning... Was the cause mechanical failure? Or was the cause human error? There has 2 b an explaination... Not it was just a accident!! Would u tell Mr thompson's family that? Or would u or your family accept that excuse if one of your loved one's were possibly paralyzed 4 life!?

First of all! My comment had no intent of attack on the firefighters. If you read the comment it simply stated a question of the dept. having a proper training program in place that could have averted such an incident from happening. It is a tragedy when we lose firefighters, especially young firefighter's. I never said the dept. did or did not have one but rather that "I sure hope" which in the american language means that it is an open ended statement. The reason I said this was for the benefit of those young firefighters families so they might have their eyes open when they finish their grieving process because the firefighters and their families were the real losers in this tragedy. And on a personal note to Shanita. I am a firefighter and it really does not matter if one has 17 years of experience or 3 years, NFPA 1002 is what it is. Finally to USMC85 and your comment about support, I believe this statement stands for itself. I respect both your feelings that stem from an emotional standpoint so respect mine that stemmed from a professional and training standpoint.

Jens, let me assure you that these two gentlemen have all the necessary criteria in place. Second, are you a firefighter? Third do you really think this comment board is the place to start making these type of comments? Right now there should be nothing but unconditional love and support for these two firefighters, and if you attended the prayer service that was held on 01/17/10 @ Sta. 15, you would seen the out pouring of love honor and brother hood displayed by firefighters from all over North Carolina, not just Robeson county.

It is a shame that two young men got hurt in this accident. These young fight fighters need to realize that they don't do any good if they don't make it to the fire. That is one of the most important things about rescue is making sure you stay safe.

Ross they were responding to a structure fire. I've seen people flick a cig a long ways but there is little to no change that a person flicked a butt all the way to a house.

I sure hope that this dept. followed NFPA 1002 for a proper training program before putting such a young driver behind the wheel.

I hope the fire they were responding to wasn't caused by a cigarett smoker that thumped his butt into someones yard. If so they neeed to be held responsible.
