LUMBERTON — A pair of fair-share givers sped toward winning a new car at the United Way Car Giveaway at Lumberton Chevrolet on Tuesday.

The first name to be drawn from the cylinder was Kathryn Lawrence, of Lumber Bridge. She is an employee at BB&T. The second finalist picked was Belinda Oxendine, of Lumberton, who works at the Robeson County Department of Social Services.

Oxendine, a fair-share contributor of 15 years, said she she supports United Way to give foster children a brighter Christmas and to aid the local hospices.

Lawrence could not be reached.

Sandra Oliver, executive director of the United Way of Robeson County, ensured the 880 entries were mixed well in the cylinder before Tracy McDaniel, the title clerk at the dealership, drew the names.

Lawrence and Oxendine became the 16th and 17th finalists among 20 who will participate in a reverse raffle in December at Biggs Park Mall. The last person standing will pick an envelope that will reveal which car they will drive away in — a Chevrolet Spark, Nissan Versa, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris.

The participating dealerships are Lumberton Chevrolet, Lumberton Honda, Terry Chapin Nissan, Peterson Toyota and Fair Bluff Ford, which will host the final drawing on Tuesday.
