Abner Harrington

FAIRMONT — Abner Mack Harrington, 67, of Fairmont, passed away at Duke Hospice of the Meadowlands in Hillsborough on Jan. 11, 2013, due to complications from melanoma.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, 416 S. Main St., in Fairmont. A private burial will follow in Floyd Cemetery in Fairmont.

Abner was a graduate of N.C. State University, completing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in math education. After graduating, he served for two years as an officer in the U.S .Army, including a one year tour of duty in Vietnam, receiving a Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal for his service. Abner was co-owner and operator of Fairmont Gas Company. He was active in community life, serving in many leadership roles, including deacon chair and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church in Fairmont; on the Board of Education of the Fairmont City Schools and the Public Schools of Robeson County for a combined twenty years; and as a member and leader of other civic organizations, including the Fairmont Rotary Club and Communities in Schools of Robeson County. He was a proud member of the Wolfpack Club, and loved attending N.C. State football games and supporting the Wolfpack with Susan, Brian, and Tyler.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Susan McCormick Harrington; a son, Abner Brian Harrington of Liberty and daughter-in-law-to-be, Ashley Gill of Hattiesburg, Miss.; his parents, A. Welton and Irene J. Harrington of Marietta; his sisters, Mary and John Wilkerson of Fairmont, and Marie and Tony Graham of Harrisonburg, Va.; a brother, Archie and Dare Harrington of Roanoke, Va.; a beloved sister-in-law and nephew, Jennie Rose and Tyler Davis of Fairmont; a sister-in-law, Mickie McCormick of Raleigh; a brother-in-law, Frank and Mary Kathryn McCormick of Fairmont; and many other nieces and nephews.

The visitation will follow in the First Baptist Church fellowship hall.
