FAIRMONT — “I guess you could say it was one of those nights because everything was going,” Fairmont coach Michael Baker said after Friday’s 105-57 win over South Robeson.

The Golden Tornadoes (17-3, 6-0) made 13 of 18 3-pointers including a career-high seven long-distance jumpers from Jackie Oxendine. Oxendine led all scorers with 23 points. He was followed by a 20-point outing from Kwinton Hinson.

Fairmont never looked back after a 36-point first quarter and won its 34th consecutive conference game.

Canady saves Bulldogs

ST. PAULS — With a leading scorer on the bench and another starter unavailable for disciplinary reasons, Dustin Canady took advantage of his opportunity for more shots and helped St. Pauls’ boys basketball team survive a scare Friday night from Red Springs.

Trailing by a point with 16 seconds left, Canady’s mid-range jumper followed by consecutive free throws after a turnover proved to be the clincher for the Three Rivers Conference’s second-place team.

The 66-63 decision was St. Pauls’ second straight victory after Tuesday’s loss to Fairmont.

“Dustin had a heck of the game tonight and really stepped up when we needed him too,” St. Pauls coach Travis Lemanksi said. “He was cool under pressure in the fourth quarter.”

Canady pumped in a career high 24 points while Deion Gilchrist pitched in with 17.

Patriots run away from Pirates

LUMBERTON — Lumberton coach Mackey Register wasn’t sure what happened in Friday’s 62-44 home loss to Pinecrest in a pivotal Southeastern Conference game for both teams.

A close game in the third quarter turned into a rout quickly down the stretch.

“We didn’t play well enough to win and it’s really disappointing,” Register said. “We had to sit some guys in the first half for disciplinary problems and that hurt us. We didn’t execute late in the game. The bottom line is that we needed to win tonight and we didn’t. I’ll take the blame.”
