FAIR BLUFF — The last two finalists were selected Thursday during a drawing at Fair Bluff Ford for the United Way Car Giveaway.
The first name to be plucked from the cylinder was Damien Ralston’s of Lumberton. Ralston, an an employee at International Paper, could not be reached for a comment.
The second name drawn was Debra Jackson of Bladenboro. An employee at Monach, this is her first year of donating to the United Way.
“I saw what good the United Way was doing at Monarch and the Robeson County Church and Community Center and I knew I had to get involved,” said Jackson, who said she will keep the car if she wins.
Sandra Oliver, executive director of the United Way of Robeson County, ensured that the 880 entries were mixed well in the cylinder before Jeff Prince, the owner and manager of the dealership, drew the names.
Ralston and Jackson became the 19th and 20th finalists who will participate in a reverse raffle on Jan. 17 at Biggs Park Mall. The person whose name is the last drawn will pick an envelope that will determine which car he or she will drive away in — a Chevrolet Spark, Nissan Versa, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris.
The other 18 finalists are: James B. Strickland; Murray West; Laura Davis; Kimberly Gore; Rocky A. Locklear; Trina Dixon; Shirley Strickland; Rose Freeman; Susan Rozier; Teresa Tyler; Carletta Prevatte; Michael Terefenko; Deborah Council; David Carroll; Walter Whitted; Stephanie Chase-Bullard; Kathryn Lawrence; and Belinda Oxendine.
In addition to Fair Bluff Ford, the other participating dealerships are Lumberton Chevrolet, Lumberton Honda, Terry Chapin Nissan and Peterson Toyota.
The giveaway contest is open to people who donate a “fair share” to the United Way, which is defined as one hour’s pay per month. The goal for the current campaign, which will end in early 2013, is $715,000. The United Way uses the money to support numerous human-service agencies throughout Robeson County.
