Mary Humphrey

SHANNON — Mary Sue Page Humphrey, 83, of Shannon died Jan. 3, 2013, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Red Springs Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Michael McGehee officiating. Burial will follow in Alloway Cemetery.

Humphrey was born in Walton County, Ga., on Oct. 30, 1929, to the late John Roy Page and Mary Lou Davis Page.

She graduated high school in Rome, Ga., and enrolled at Meredith College in Raleigh. She graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in religion in 1950 and married 10 days later Donald Hugh Humphrey, a graduate of N.C. State, who would be her best friend for the next 54 years. They raised three sons on the family farm in Shannon, where she ran the household and a considerable garden.

Her love for the Lord and his service led her to the Red Springs Presbyterian Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, senior youth leader, women of the church officer and honorary life member. She loved the South, classical music, books, gardening, her children and grandchildren, who knew her as Mama Sue.

Her love of education led her to substitute and run the study hall at Red Springs High School for several years. Later, she taught adult high school education classes through Robeson Community College for 20 years. She loved re-enacting the role of women during the War Between the States and soon got Don in it, too. Later two of her sons, Mike and John, joined the 26^th regiment N.C. troops. Through re-enacting many enjoyable trips were taken and new friends were made.

Hers was a life lived to the fullest. She shared her faith in God and her love for her fellow man with all. Her knowledge of the Bible was widely known and respected. She was always quick to forgive, quick to see the good in everyone and quick to love. What a wonderful world this would be if everyone lived as Mary Sue Humphrey lived – a true Georgia peach.

Humphrey was preceded in death by her husband, Don.

She was survived by her sons, James Steven Humphrey of Durham, Michael Davis Humphrey and his wife Deborah of Shannon, and John Randall Humphrey of Lumberton; her grandchildren, Melissa H. Newhall and her husband Scott, Joseph Nathaniel “Nathan” Humphrey and Kaitlyn V. Humphrey; two great-grandchildren, Alexander Scott Newhall and Michael Benjamin Newhall; and numerous cousins.

The visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Crumpler Funeral Home, 220 E. Fourth Ave., Red Springs, N.C.

LUMBERTON — Eva Baxley Sessoms, 85, of Lumberton, passed away Jan. 4, 2013, at Wesley Pines Retirement Center in Lumberton.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Floyd Memorial Chapel, the Rev. Richard Hicks officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Faith Cemetery in Lumberton.

Sessoms was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin Baxley and Mary Meares Baxley; her husband, Robert Franklin Sessoms; and her brothers, Rudolph Baxley, Julius Baxley, Carl Baxley, Rowland Baxley and Raymond Baxley.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Fitzgerald and husband Thomas, and Gail Lassiter and husband Mitchell, all of Lumberton; her sister, Myrtle Miller of Lumberton; two grandchildren, Amy Schneider and Mitch Lassiter; and six great-grandchildren, Brianna, Katelyn, Dylan, Ayden, Grace and Ava.

The visitation will from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory Inc., 809 E. 5th Fifth, Lumberton.
