Maggie Oxendine
PEMBROKE — Maggie Johnson Oxendine, 96, of Pembroke, died Jan. 17, 2013, at her home.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Berea Baptist Church in Pembroke, the Rev. Chris Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Oxendine was loved by many and was a faithful member of Berea Baptist Church, where she worked in the nursery for more than 60 years. Through these years of service Mrs. Mag was been a loving and caring person to the many children that attended Berea Baptist Church and to her community.
Oxendine was preceded in death by her husband, William X. Oxendine; a son, William Matthew Oxendine; her sisters, Magenta Melrose (Jenny) Maynor, Carromae Brewington, Sally Brooks, Anna Johnston and Claire Johnston; and her brothers, James W. (J.W.) Johnson, Brisco Johnston and John D. (Blue) Johnson.
She is survived by her daughter, Hazel K. Perez and husband, Mannie Perez of Pembroke; a brother, Gary Johnston of San Diego, Calif.; her granddaughters, Jeri L. Locklear of Pembroke and Candace M. Dial and husband Derrick I. Dial of Maxton; and a grandson, William F. Deese and wife Tina M. Deese of Maxton; five great-grandchildren, Jared Locklear, Emmanuel Locklear, Brittany Locklear, William A. Deese and Jaileana Deese; and four great-great-grandchildren, Kaden X. Oxendine, Brendon E. Locklear, Chandler Locklear and Riah Locklear. Ever the proponent of “It takes a village,” she leaves two extended grandsons, Andrew Hammonds and Charles Maynor.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Revels Funeral Home Lumberton.
