Wreck kills Red Springs woman
by Teddy Kulmala
Staff writer

RED SPRINGS — A 23-year-old Red Springs woman was killed following a two-car accident Saturday during which her car was T-boned by a pickup truck, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Octavia Tanisha Renee Shaw, of Daniel McLeod Road, had stopped in her 2000 Ford passenger car at the intersection of Old Lowery Road and Daniel McLeod Road about 6 p.m. Saturday, according to 1st Sgt. Ardeen Hunt. Shaw was making a left turn on to McLeod Road when her car was struck on the driver’s side by a 2009 Dodge pickup truck driven by Joshua Jones, 19, of McLeod Road, Hunt said.

The truck knocked Shaw’s car off the roadway, Hunt said. Jones’ truck traveled off the left side of the roadway, overturned and came to rest upright, Hunt said.

Shaw, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. Jones was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.

According to Hunt, several vehicles parked along the side of McLeod Road may have blocked Shaw’s view.

Jones was traveling about 55 mph, which is the posted speed limit in the area, according to Hunt.

My heart is broken for her family. This is a sad situation. He was a football player and she was a cheerleader. They knew each other and lived within a mile of one another. God comfort her mothers heart. Pray for both families.

That intersection has taken another life. Over the past few years there have been alot of wrecks at that intersection. I think that the something needs to be done about that intersection. I know that its in the country, and not in the city limit but something needs to happen maybe even have the speed limit to be slower because it is a residental area. I knew Octavia when she was in the fifth and sixth grade at Oxendine and cheered for Prospect in the 7th and 8th grade. She is going to be missed by alot of her classmates. I'm praying for the family, and all the other families who have lost love ones at that intersection over the years.

Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.

A promise to fight abuse of power

The danger that is straight ahead
A hundred years ago, anyone who might have predicted in 1913 the monumental, man-made catastrophes that would occur in the rest of the 20th century would have been considered warped, if not completely mentally deranged. Who would have believed that the continent of Europe, which had not had a ...
