MAXTON — Authorities are trying to determine the name of the person whose body was found floating in the Lumber River on Saturday.
Some people who were fishing at the river found the body about 200 yards downstream from the Alma Road Bridge about 4 p.m.
Sheriff’s Maj. Howard Branch could not comment on whether or not the dead man had visible signs of injury. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
“It appeared that he may have been in the water for a couple of weeks,” Branch said.
The man is described as white or American Indian, about 5 feet, 7 inches tall, and weighing about 160 pounds, Branch said. He was wearing blue jeans, a blue long-sleeve plaid shirt and tennis shoes. He did not have any identification on him.
According to Branch, no missing people have been reported in the area recently. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 910-671-3100.
