Woman dies of wreck injuries
by Staff report

LUMBERTON — A Lumberton woman has died from injuries she suffered in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 late Sunday afternoon.

Shelby Jane Locklear was transported to Southeastern Health in Lumberton and then to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where she died early Monday. She was 57.

A juvenile passenger in Locklear’s 2001 Chrysler suffered minor injuries and was transported to Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

According to a report from Trooper J.R. Locklear of the state Highway Patrol, Locklear was driving south on I-95 in the far right lane about 5 p.m. when she attempted to change lanes and collided with a 2009 Kia driven by Janet Taylor Caulder, of Lumberton. Locklear lost control of the vehicle, it crossed over the median and collided with a northbound 2006 Ford Van driven by Richard Jean of Maine, according to the report.

No one else was injured in the accident, which happened at mile maker 28. The Robesonian learned of the fatality on Tuesday, but was unable to get information on the accident until this morning.

Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards.
