Candidate guilty in ‘92 of indecent exposure
by Teddy Kulmala
Staff writer

LUMBERTON — A current candidate for the Board of Education for the Public Schools of Robeson County and a former teacher with the school system was once guilty of indecent exposure.

Robert Lee Davis, 69, who is seeking election to an at-large seat on the school board, was charged in March 1992 with indecent exposure following a complaint from a 15-year-old girl, according to an article in the March 20, 1992, edition of The Robesonian. He was working as a social studies teacher at Fairmont High School at the time.

He denies the allegations, saying he didn’t get a fair trial.

The girl told police she was in her car at about 6 p.m. outside Biggs Park Mall waiting for her family to return. According to the report, she noticed a truck rounding the building and soon realized the truck had parked behind her car.

According to the report, Davis “unzipped his pants and exposed himself.” The girl then blew the horn and Davis fled. She took down the truck’s license plate number and gave it to authorities.

According to a court document from April 1994, Davis was sentenced to two years of supervised probation and had to pay a $500 fine.

Davis told The Robesonian this morning that it was not a teenage girl who accused him but two off-duty police officers.

“I was told then by the presiding Judge Carmical, that I was charged with indecent exposure,” he said. “I didn’t have a warrant served on me. They did not identify anybody who had accused me of a crime. … No person ever even said they filed a charge against me.”

Davis said a prosecutor told him that he could not have a lawyer. He asked the court to conduct an investigation.

“These issues have never been entertained as of right now,” he said.

Davis is one of five candidates for three at-large seats on the Board of Education. The others are Jo Ann Chavis Lowery, Jerry Long and John Campbell, all of whom are incumbents, and challenger Randy Lawson.

Not one time have I heard you say NO I DID NOT DO THIS!!! If this would have been my CHILD... we would have known back in 1992 what REALLY happened. It would have been settled, OK!! Situations just like this don't make the BABY BOOMERS or my generation any different from each other. I know my GOD is coming back real soon!! Because the things I read in this newspaper about our everyday citizens, board members, preachers, & politicians is making me SICK!! The Bible is fulfilling its self each & every day. We all should be asking for forgiveness each & every minute of every day!! I am not PERFECT, I have my faults & I will one day stand before God & be held accountable for my actions BUT some people will have a little more explaining to do than I!! & this also addresses the dirty politicians that run these dirty elections, just to benefit you & yours!! My God sees everything.. we should be a County that prays for each other & works together for the benefit of our Future!! Because my baby, your grandchild & your great-grand depend on it, OK!! They are our future!! When I grow old & my health begins to fail me... I want to know there will be an Eye dr, Dentist.. to help take care of ME!! Love always... because we are Saved by grace & mercy, My friend!!! Go to church tomorrow & praise Him... cause your Heart is still beating & because He is Worthy!!

FOR REAL NOW we are talking about Robeson County. There are alot of innocent people who takes pleas for the simple reason, a fair trial is almost unheard of in Robeson County (need to get the DAs office for intimatating witness and using liars to convict people, and Robeson County citizens need to wake up and see this, thats how innocent people go to jail and quilty people work free). People that pass jugdement so quick needs to go sit in a court room for about a week and you would see first hand how the buddie system works. I've seen a lawyer stand infront of a judge that sure needed to be charged with exposing their self.. And the school board attorney signing forfeiture letters to basically steal bond money. WHATS THE DIFFERENTS? ITS WHO YOU ARE AND WHO YOU KNOW!

I don't believe either side of this case. I hate to say that he might very well have been guilty of the crime. But this is also the law enforcement agency that has one of the worst records in recent history.

I'd rather look at his privates in public than him rob us blind in private.

This pervert should not be elected. If he is too sorry to stand up and fight for his own rights then how can you expect him to stand and fight for the rights of our children? Now with that being said, I still would not be surprised if he got elected. After all, this is robeson county.

His excuse makes no sense whatsoever. No DA would tell anyone that they had no right to a lawyer. Also, an accusation w/o a witness would never end in a guilty verdict. There also would heve to be a warrant served on him to appear in court. And why would he not appeal his case after being found guilty and placed on probation. I would never accept a guilty verdict if I did not commit the crime.

WHAT!!!!!!!!!! Mr. Davis you got charged and when to court. Sounds like you had the opportunity to plead to a lesser offense of indecent exposure as opposed to a more serious offense. The matter was entertained when you were placed on probation for two (2) years and paid the 500 fine. If you felt like you got a raw deal why didn't you appeal your case. Now, you are running for office (Public Schools) and have a charge of indecent exposure. Are you a nut? (Maybe, that's the wrong word to use).

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.
