LUMBERTON — The man who shot and wounded Lumberton Master Police Officer Marcus Norton on Sunday morning has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Police Chief Mike McNeill.

Victor Ronald Spearman, 22, shot himself in the head while hiding in a trash receptacle behind a home on East Third Street on Sunday morning, McNeill said, and died about 4:30 p.m. at an undisclosed hospital. He was rushed to Southeastern Medical Center by ambulance and was then transferred to the hospital.

Norton is at home recovering from a wound to the back of his left leg.

According to McNeill, police knew that Spearman was inside the trash bin and spent “several hours … trying to get him to put his gun down. Our negotiators were talking to him.”

Norton and a second officer had seen a man believed to be Spearman trying to break into Haywood Auto Sales on East Second Street at about 4:30 a.m., McNeill said. Spearman ran to the yard of a East Third Street home when the officers approached.

“They chased him over to a yard and he hid himself in the yard,” McNeill said.

The officers spotted Spearman behind some bushes in the yard, shots were fired, and Norton was struck in the leg at about 5 a.m., McNeill said. Spearman then hid inside the trash bin.

That began the standoff that lasted several hours after police cordoned off a 10-block area.

According to Spearman’s Facebook page, the Duplin County native attended Lumberton High School and later moved to Rose Hill, where he worked at House of Raeford, a poultry processing plant. He moved back to Lumberton when things “went south” and he “started getting into trouble,” according to his page.

A post on Spearman’s page says that he recently broke up with his girlfriend. This morning, there were several posts on his page expressing remorse at Spearman’s death, calling him a classmate and friend who “is gone too soon.”

Spearman was on probation in Duplin County for charges of a DWI and speeding to elude arrest in 2010, according to the North Carolina Department of Corrections. Spearman had previously faced charges of forgery, vandalism, larceny, and breaking and entering.

McNeill said the investigation has been handed over to the State Bureau of Investigation, which is standard procedure when a police officer has been shot.

“He is in a lot of pain, but basically doing fine,” Heather Norton said Monday about her husband. “He didn’t have to have surgery. The doctors felt it was better to leave the bullet in rather than risk complications.”

Norton, who is 32, lives in Laurel Hill in Scotland County and has been employed with Lumberton Police Department for seven years.

“My first reaction when I heard was anger,” said Heather Norton. “How could you not be upset when you find out that your husband has been shot? But now all I feel is sadness. The person involved is dead and even he is someone’s child. So it is a sad situation for everyone involved.”

Heather Norton, who works as a registered nurse at Scotland Memorial Hospital, said Master Police Officer Jeremiah Goodson’s shooting death on July 17 had weighed on her and her husband.

“In the back of your mind there is always that kind of fear, but when it happens so close to home, you really start to think,” she said. “Officer Goodson and my husband are about the same age and it just forces you to realize that it can happen to anyone and at anytime.”

Goodson was shot and killed at a service station off Fayetteville Road while trying to arrest a person who was wanted on several charges. Goodson, who was struck four times, had been off-duty when he saw the person and tried to make the arrest.

District Attorney Johnson Britt has said he would seek the death penalty for Marques Ramon Brown, 27, who has been charged with first-degree murder.

Goodson is survived by his wife Lametria, and the couple’s a newborn son and a 2-year-old daughter, and a 16-year-old adopted son. There are multiple efforts to raise money to help the Goodson family.

I just want to say that everyone that has left a negative comment about this story is really FULL OF IT! I knew this gentleman personally and this article as well as previous articles have painted him as a PSYCHOTIC CRIMINAL, which he was not. Yes, we are all humans and we do things in life that will eventually catch up 2 us but that don't mean people should remember us that way. What about the positive things he has done in his life, ever thought about that? If what I am hearing on the streets is true then "LPD" should b ashamed of theirselves. If you want to teach a certain section of Lumberton a lesson then go on that side don't take innocent lives for a LESSON 101. I bet if a white or indian gentleman were to walk down the road then the COPS would keep riding. But I guess since the Trevon Martin accident that means that all black guys will be profiled as a criminal, right? I am very upset with LPD and yes I do know some will not agree with this comment but I really could care less. For the Spearman family, I hope this case will not be put at the bottom of the barrel like some cases in Robeson County has been done. RIP VICTOR "VIC" SPEARMAN, GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN!!

I worked with Victor and I truly know that Victor will not take his life and I never knew that victor owe a gun or had the money to buy a gun. The Police must been running from victor to get shot in the back of the leg... Sound like the police was scare to take a real shot to cover up Victor closed casket face shot....One more thing they never got a call from no dispatch about a building been broken in too; just a young back kid walking and they got mad bc they had to chase him and Victor do have a lot of family and friends...Police is here to Protect n Sever not Chase and Murder

FIRST POST, READ THESE POSTS LONG ENOUGH AND FOR THE MOST PART I APPLAUD THE MAJORITY OF YOU FOR YOUR SINCERE THOUGHTS. BUT TO THOSE WHO HAVE NO REAL IDEA ABOUT ANYTHING,CORUPTON AND INDIAN FEATHER, UNTIL YOU HAVE WORN A BADGE AND RISKED YOUR LIFE FOR OTHERS, DO NOT SPEAK AGAINST MEN WHO WOULD GLADLY LAY DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR YOU. YOUR POSTS ARE FULL OF LIES AND YOU HOPE TO GET OTHERS TO BELIEVE THEM. A MAN MADE BAD CHOICES AND HE ALONE DECIDED HIS FATE. YOU TWO GET TOGETHER AND TELL YOUR LIES TO EACH OTHER THAT WAY AT LEAST SOMEONE WILL BELIEVE YOU.

It's frustrating when you have people like Corruptanon and the NAACP, who only show up to play the race card. I don't see/hear of them fighting gang violence which negatively affects the minority communities. Where were they when a young black father was gunned down in front of his son by another black man who had mistaken him for someone else. The NAACP exploits their own people. This is sad for all involved, but keep it in perspective.

Maybe instead of being concerned what happened, maybe we should all be concerned on WHY? The economic state of Robeson County has declined drastically over the last couple of decades. Jobs, no longer exist. The drug related crime rate has sky rocketed along with the felony crime rate, partially due to this. Instead on blaming all this on the color of someone's skin, maybe we need to look to our leaders to help find a solution to the underlying problems that are occurring. I, presently, live in New Mexico. We have had 23 police related shootings in the last 2 years. Economically, socially and politically, New Mexico is very similar to Rob Co. It can get worse. It will get worse if something is not done and done quickly.

Young lady, check these numbers and give us an update: Whats the racial make-up of the area? Percent of minorities?

Now don't get angry with me when you see that an area with a high amount of minorities also has a high amount of crime. Just a fact.

Sir,

We live in America. Give us your poor, your weak, your tired...you know that famous saying. America has been founded on the fact that we accept everyone no matter of creed or color. That is what has made us great. We have law enforcement and military dying everyday for those freedoms. They are not fighting for just the white man, just the Indian or the Asian. They are fighting for our way of life.

I'm saying that they way of life is going to the toliet. Why? You can't blame the black man, you can't blame the Natives. You can't really blame any one race. It's us as Americans that are failing. When things get tough, then people will do what it takes to survive. It's not always the best choice, but, it happens.

BTW, I have read the 2010 Census for Robeson County, NC and New Mexico, along with several other states. Have you?

It saddens me that another cop was shot and another life taken. With that being said i stay one street over from 2nd street with children and my property was broken into last week. Everything was taken as well as other neighbors homes. I hope that this person wasnt responsible but if so he deserve what he got. When you steal there are consequences to be made and sadly it ended his life.

You have to know all of these LPD officers to truly know how wonderful they are. I know several of them and each and every one of them are thoughtful, friendly, and so very fun to be around and to know. I do believe that at any given time if you are in need of a helping hand, they would not think twice about helping you. On duty or off duty. Marcus is so sweet and so full of laughter and life. He can make you laugh at just one word. So glad and so grateful that it wasn't as bad (for him) as it could've been. That is how we know that God is in total control of and over every situation. Love you Marcus and(RIP Jeremiah Goodson!!!)

Corruptanon

If you would please post your name and address so all the Law Enforcement Officers can start sending you evidence because that has got to be the quickest turn around on ballistic evidence I have ever seen. This shooting just happened yesterday and according to you, they have already determined that the bullet in his face wasn't fired from his weapon. Let me find out we got a real life CSI Las Vegas in Robeson County. My biggest fear is that there are actually other Lumbertonians that believe your bull crap

This is another unfortunate event in Robeson County. However, it seems that the suspect was entirely in control of everything that happened. An Officer was injured. There was a stand-off for several hours. The suspect made the decision to end his life. The story is sad, but one that our community continues to deal with. Law Enforcement should be rewarded for the situations that they often encounter, that come as a decision of others. However, they are not. Blessed be the Peacemakers...

Hey indianfeather30....if I give you one of my pistols will YOU find yourself a trashcan??? Idiot! As far as the NAACP, we've already got enough racism in Robeson County...especially against whites...I deal with it almost everyday. If you're so angry, and can't find a trashcan, just move...people like you are half of the problem right now.

AAAAMEN FRIEND! I agree with the statement about "racism against whites" TOTALLY... I myself can blend in with different races and noone knows what I am and you are right, THE TRUE RACISM IS AGAINST THE WHITES. I really wish they would speak up more, but as soon as they do they are called RACIST. Which 99% of the times it's false, but, they'll shut up when called that word, hang their head and walk away.

I am Indian, but here's what I'm gonna do, I'm going to open a shirt shop and sell shirts and caps that read: WHITE PRIDE, WHITE POWER, "YOU DIDN'T BUILD THAT, A WHITE MAN DID" etc... I'm tired of the racism coming from minorities all the time, it's time for folks(white) to speak up. Ross

You are obviously young and oblivious to the facts of the situation. Funny how you automatically yell for the NAACP. You can call the NAACP, The EBT, The ABC, or the 123. Its not going to change the facts of this case. THis young man made a choice to break into this buisness. It was also his choice to run from the police department, and to shoot at the Police Department. As unfortunate as it is, this man dies as a direct result of his own actions. Hinse the word Self Inflicted. Last time I chaecked, there were no members of the NAACP employed with the SBI or the District Attorneys Office. These are the only two organizations that matter in this investigation. Hats off to all the Law Enforcement Officers that were present yesterday. Wishing Marcus Norton a speedy recovery. also praying for the suspects family.

Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards.
