LUMBERTON — The American Red Cross is asking for donations of money to help the victims of the killer tornado that devastated Moore, Okla., on Monday.

Carol Ann Lentz, the executive director of the Scotland County and Robeson County chapters, said that financial donations will go to the Disaster Relief Fund, which offers food, shelter, mental health counseling and other support to victims.

Lentz said that donations can be made at the chapter’s office at 600 W. Fifth St., Lumberton, by calling 1-800-733-2767 or by visiting redcross.org. A $10 donation can also be made by texting “redcross” to 90999.

The two-mile-wide tornado swept through the suburbs of Oklahoma City, destroying 2,400 homes, uprooting trees, knocking down power lines and killing 24 people, including nine children.

Lentz said that food and clothing donations cannot be effectively delivered to victims because of debris blocking transportation routes.

“The affected communities have no way to collect or distribute donations,” she said.

Lentz also said that volunteers who know the affected area are working with surrounding Red Cross chapters to help victims.

“We’re already on the ground. We have a leadership team in place and we’re forming a second one,” she said. “Our volunteers are amazing.”
