LUMBERTON — Students participating in this year’s annual Battle of the Books competition will be recognized for their achievement when the Public Schools of Robeson County school board holds its regular monthly meeting tonight.
The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the school administration building on Caton Road.
According to schools spokesperson Tasha Oxendine, tonight’s recognition will be of elementary and middle school students who took part in the district competition. Also, students from Prospect Elementary School and Pembroke Middle School will be recognized for having competed in the regional Battle of the Books competition, Oxendine said.
Students from the following schools participated in the district competition: Littlefield Middle; Fairmont Middle; Prospect Elementary; Red Springs Middle; Orrum Middle; and Pembroke Middle.
Also at tonight’s meeting, Dale Scott, an English III teacher at Lumberton High School, will be recognized for her work with the High Schools That Work Program. The program was established in the late 1980s by the Southern Regional Education Board State Vocational Education Consortium.
The program, which is described as using “ research-proven strategies to help states transform their public high schools to places where all students learn at high levels,” is now operating at 1,200 sites in 30 states and the District of Columbia.
In other business, the board will:
— Hear a report from the district’s finance officer concerning the school district’s planning budget for fiscal year 2013-14.
— Consider a computer recycling contract.
— Appoint a member to the Robeson Community College board of trustees.
— Discuss an auditor’s contract.
Lets not forget our Superintendent Mr. Hunt. Had it not been for his $10,000.00 bonus, none of these accomplishments would be possible.
