MCDONALD — A little community will hit a big milestone this weekend.

McDonald on Saturday will mark the 100th anniversary of its incorporation as a town with a celebration at McDonald First Baptist Church. The Centennial Celebration will bring together current and former residents in a program that will feature Senior U.S. District Judge W. Earl Britt, a native of the town.

In addition to Britt’s keynote address, the festivities, which begin at 11 a.m., will include reflections from descendants of the town’s founding fathers. Current and past residents, their families and friends will enjoy a meal immediately after the program.

Mayor James Taylor said about 200 people are expected to attend —about 80 more than the town’s population of 120.

This year is actually the 101st anniversary of the town’s official incorporation, but Taylor said that “events” last year prevented the town from carrying out its celebration.

“We are a small community but one rich in heritage,” Taylor said. “We wanted to celebrate our first hundred years as a community and kick off the next hundred years.”

The first historical reference to what is now McDonald dates back to just after the American Revolution, but it wasn’t until March 8, 1911, that the General Assembly officially incorporated the town, according to Taylor, 50, who began serving on the town council when he was about 27.

The town has an extensive military heritage, with a McDonald resident serving in almost every major conflict since the town’s incorporation. It has had many contributions to local and state law enforcement, including a number of residents who have recently retired or are currently serving the U.S. marshal service and the state Highway Patrol, and former Robeson County Sheriff Hubert Stone.

The town also has provided a number of judges to the state and federal judiciary.

Taylor said McDonald is a “giving” community, not necessarily in terms of money, but time, resources and experiences.

“They’ve developed some great people by that,” he said. “… You don’t find that in a lot of places.”

@trutalk: YOU have written one of the most well thought-out and intelligent letter ever printed in THE ROBESONIAN. However, I do take exception to 2 things. One, I've NEVER referred to EVERYBODY in Red Springs as an "idiot", and (2)even though you may no longer SEE physically where The Compound was, most of the living bodies that made it up are right back on the streets, or they never went up to the Big House in Raliegh to begin with. And EVERYTHING that ever went on in The Compound is still occuring today. Other than that, you wrote a fine letter.

Someone should sue PercyKution and maybe even the robesonian for libel. Defamation covers a broad range. There is a long history of lawyers and judges from Mcdonald and the Stone family that should take offense to this assault.

I was raised around Mcdonald in the 40's,50's,and 60's. It was and always will be a favorite part of my life.

@corklock: When used in a literary format, the pronoun THE ROBESONIAN should be capitalized. Where did YOU go to school, Red Springs? And you say McDonald turned out a bunch of scumbag (spit) lawyers and judges AS WELL as the infamous Hubert Stone Gang???? Nuke it. Thats MY opinion.

As for suing me, go ahead son. Bring it on. But leave THE ROBESONIAN out of it. It's the ONLY bright light of TRUTH in the County.

@corklock... I often sit back and read the comments that PercyKution makes in THE ROBESONIAN. The comments have become repetitious. He constantly speaks negative of Red Springs for some unknown reason. I have come to believe that someone from Red Springs made his childhood painful, someone from Red Springs took his female companion, or someone from Red Springs rejected him. Despite the reasoning, ALL people from Red Springs are not idiots. Before we go any farther, no PercyKution did not say those exact words. However,to suggest someone received his or her education from Red Springs because grammatical error speaks volumes of his opinions toward people from Red Springs. The last time I checked, the entire school system was not up to standards (Even his part of the County). His comments are always aim toward killing the person, looking into his or her eyes, and The Compound. PercyKution's knowledge of the The Compound (which was ONCE located on Johnson Rd. and Industrial Drive)also lack support because he continues to refer to a location that has not been in existence for about three (3) to four (4) years. Despite this fact, he continues to refer to The Compound each time an article is in paper (THE ROBESONIAN)about drugs and other crimes. I am aware that this is America and one does have the freedom of speech, press, and religion (or not to be religious). We know to look in the eyes, to shoot the "alleged criminal" on the spot, that Red Springs is not your place of choice, you do not like (spit)lawyers and judges, you do not vote for D.A. Britt, and you have the right to voice opinion. Finally, we know that your level of intelligence is high enough to know that an individual should use all caps writing THE ROBESONIAN.... PercyKution, do us all expand your post beyond the list of comments that you have saved.

And yes, I am from Red Springs, educated in Red Springs, and far from ignorant.

If I was from Mcdonald, I don't think I would brag about it being the home of the infamous KILLER Hubert Stone. And his boy was another one. Other than that, its an OK place.

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.
