Police probe shooting death
by Staff report

LUMBERTON — A Lumberton man was shot and killed early Sunday on the front porch of a home on Hayes Street, according to police Capt. Johnny Barnes.

David Allen Hinson, Jr., 34, was shot once when 52-year-old Donald Forbus opened a door to find Hinson on his front porch, Barnes said.

Forbus told investigators that he heard noises outside of his home shortly after 5 a.m. and went to the door with his revolver in his hand. He told investigators that he was confronted by Hinson, shot him once, and then dialed 911.

Charges have not been filed against Forbus. The two men did not know each other, according to Barnes.

Hinson has previously faced charges for driving while impaired, simple assault and injury to real property.

The case remains under investigation.

Frankly for those folks such as judgenot, back off with your comments. You are right I wasnt there and neither were you unless you are withholding information (?), but I know today we laid to rest a very young man. Who didnt have to be killed because of a trigger happy person. I now believe and will always believe this man was just looking to kill someone. Our family has loss a good hard working person and yes he did his fair share of partying but in no way did that stop him from being a great dad, brother, nephew, uncle or a friend. At this point it seems to me you just want attention to be placed on you. You have did nothing but criticize someone who you claim not to know either way so why not keep your common sense thoughts to yourself and leave our family along. We have enough to deal with in days to come and the last thing we need is another busy body trying to tell us about something you know nothing about, ..........a loss of a loved one in cold blood.

blood murder.

Trigger happy ,I think its yes indeed. For instance, last Sunday morning before day {not sure of the time}a young man came to my door,I looked out to see if I knew him ,I didn't. I opened my door anyway to see what he wanted, it was to only use the phone. His car had blew a tire, and was in a ditch , he needed help. I don't know either of these men involved in this matter, but just think ,what if I had went to my door and shot and killed this person who's car was in a ditch. I would have been a cold bloodied murderer, this trigger happy man should have been a brave little trooper and just asked what he wanted. For you see I'm a 5 foot tall lady, and I didn't even carry a bat.

I knew David Jr. personally and by no means would I take up for him if he was in the wrong but the facts are not all out there. The guys porch he was on, David Jr knew his daughter and he knew his daughter well. David wasnt a theif if he needed something he would get out and work his butt off for it. The question in everyones mind should be why was his hat and phone found so far from him? David was the type that if he wanted to bring trouble then he would have a crowd with him. He wouldnt have been alone by no means. It is obvious that he wasnt meaning any harm at all he just a simple mistake. People want to judge why he was out at 5 am on a Sunday morning when in all realisation it was late saturday night and it was considered partying for the weekend. Who hasnt partied on the weekend who hasnt tried to have fun and it roll over into the early morning hours. David was a great father he always made sure his kids had even if he didnt. David wasn't one that would just go up to a random house that he didnt know. If Lumberton PD Detectives would have done a thorough investigation then everyone would probally be at more peace and have a better understanding of what went on. When a murder happens from my understanding why wasnt there any crime tape put up and all evidence was not investigated. As soon as David Jr's body was moved the shooter just simply just washed the blood off right off of his porch. Did the Lumberton Police Dept let anyone know that they hit David Jr in the face with the door. Just because he was deceased doesnt mean to just throw him around and bang him up or is this a cover up to state that David Jr was trying to intrude. Lumberton PD does not follow through with all their investigations and to top it all off there were only one detective for this murder when no one is perfect and that may be why evidence and the investigation was not done properly and overlooked. Just remember that the family is seeing the nasty comments and if you didnt know the individual personally then you should not be making the comments that you are making. Put yourself in their shoes and just know that they have feelings and the monster that they are trying to say David Jr is, he isn't!!!

I know now why we have gun activist trying to remove handguns from every home in America. Do you know how many accidents we have happen in this country every day involving firearms? The first thing you are taught is that accidents happen. But when it's not "life" you are protecting but "property" i'm just not convinced we have the right to take a human life. Friend or no friend its the principal. If you are confronting someone and "either" of you get spooked and you have your finger on the trigger someone is going to get killed! And it may not be your intention. Are you willing to tell God that you took the life of your brother or sister because he/she was on your property? Because you worked so hard for that shiny grill or riding lawnmower? That's why we have the police. To avoid accidents by leaving it to the professionals. Yes it may take 10- 20 mins but there are only 8 or so officers to work the city on a night shift. Do you know how many citizens just eight officers are charged with protecting on a given night? A saturday night? No, because you are to busy reading Gun & ammo. Playing John Wayne in the mirror. If you point a gun at me my first reaction is going to be to flee if i am unarmed and avoid getting arrested if i am in the wrong. Would you shoot me anyway? Could it be that, while trying to flee, you assume i am attacking you with intentions to do you harm? To many things can go wrong in a situation like that.

I read a comment that David Jr.s hat and cell phone was found near a tree in the yard. If he was found on the porch why was his hat and phone so far from his body. Why weren't they on his person? Or at least close by where he fell? Could he had been stumbling around after drinking all night looking for some where to crash after dropping his hat and phone from his direction of travel. Could that be why his personal belongings weren't on his person? He stumbled through the yard and up onto the porch of what he thought was a abandoned house looking for some where to lay down. Was that why so much noise was being made by someone trying to steal something? Or did something else go down completely? The evidence will have to speak for itself. I'll say this. David Jr. may have been in the wrong, it's possible and it could have been an accident but my money is on whatever that fish smell is...

I went to school with David and I am sorry to hear this. I had not seen him in many many years but I know that when we were in school together he was always a nice person. David was the type of kid that would stand up for you when someone else was bullying you. I am glad that I had him as a friend in school and so sorry for his loss and for his family. May God bless them through this time.

I didnt know this man, and i am very sorry for the familys loss but i know for a fact that the Lumberton Police does not do their job and if they try to they're very selective on who they protect, because we've had a home invasion, our house was shot six times because of sum1 else nothing to do with us, our house has been broken into a few times stuff was stolen & AND EVEN KNEW WHERE OUR STOLEN PROPERTY WAS!! and NOT 1 TIME WAS JUSTICE SERVED!! and NOT 1 TIME HAVE WE SEEN A DETECTIVE and most of this is from 2 years ago or more and on the night of the home invasion 1 of my family ran and called "911" and it still took police 15 min to arrive just enough time for the robbers to get away & the police department is a few streets away, and i am very glad they passed the new Castle Law because it will make thieves & robbers think twice. Because i will shoot to kill if i feel my life is endangered no matter who it is NO OFFENSE. & believe me sum of those police on the force shouldn't be police at all, so me personally "I DONT TRUST THEM NOT EVEN WITH MY LIFE".

I agree with everything you say, but....I still think Kenny Sealey is the BEST Sheriff Robeson County ever had. Glenn Maynor wasn't a crook either. And little Ducky Duckworth can't be beat for doing his job. That boy that just got run away from Maxton was another good one. Even Red Springs has got a decent boy for their Chief. Other than those, you're about right. So just shoot, shovel, and shut up. Then forget about it.

The "it" has a name it is David Hinson Jr. He wasn't just on someone's porch, they knew he was there. The article in the paper only states the story from one side and of course we all know that the dead can't tell us his side of the story. Thank you for showing your concerns and thoughts but calling a person "it" really doesn't help anyone.

if your in my yard at anytime of the night, yea i'll call the law, but im also going to confront you with a gun drawn and ask you what your doing on MY PROPERTY? yes,the property that i pay for,its called private property for a reason,it takes an officer on average 10-20 mins sometimes even more,to get to an individuals resident, it takes a thief on average 5-10 mins sometimes less,to get what he wants, now if you find the thief 3-5 mins after he has arrived guess who just got away with your stuff? and guess who isnt going to ivestigate that far into your case because he doesnt care that you were just violated, it wernt his house. i will say i will never come out shooting, but i will come out, because thats my stuff, that i work hard for. and i wont allow it. as far as him not being a thief, well...what was his reason for being in someones yard at that time? there is no other reason. how would i feel if he was my relative? he wouldnt be,my relatives have what 90% of people dont have these days, common sense. im sorry for their families, for what they have to go through, i dont agree with the man just coming out shooting,if thats what happened.but dont place blame on a law that was passed for innocent peoples protection!

You might be half right about what the law does but as far as my nephew and his family, yea we all have comman sense. Thank you for asking, but now we might need to be concern with other folks common sense(hint). what you and so many others fail to understand is with or without common sense the fact remains that David Jr. wasn't a stranger to this happy trigger man. In fact common sense also knows that the son of trigger happy person had been a life long friend to David as well as the rest of David's family. It seems to me that you may know some facts about you local police officers but as far as my family is concern you know nothing. David wasn't a thief nor a trouble maker in fact he had lots of common sense which made him the wonderful person he was. Oh thanks for asking about him. He was invited there and yes it seem some things may have gotten out of hand but as far as I can see happy trigger man was the only one

that was not using common sense. Please read with common sense. Thanks

May 23, 2012
half right? thats the 100% Gods honest truth, you must not be from around here. i didnt say you or he didnt have common sense, i said my family has common sense enough to know not to be n somebodies yard at 5 in the morning when its "dark" and people are "sleeping", put yourself in the 50 year old mans place.its 5 in the morning, you just woke up,its dark, you cant see nothing more than a silhouette. i said i didnt agree with him coming out shooting, why dont you try reading with some common sense. i wernt there and neither were you, and neither one of us know exactly what happened, thats also why i put "if" thats what happened.im glad i know nothing about your family, i personally wouldnt befriend a person that randomly comes into my yard at 5 in the morning, for apparently no reason.just because my son is friends with a boy, doesnt mean hes my friend nor does that give him the right to be in my yard when im not aware of it.furthermore,i dont remember asking anything about your family. i hope you and your family in time find some peace with this, and that justice be served no matter who it be in favor of.without common sense there are no facts.

correct pronunciation is "trigger happy". you did get it right one time

thank you for not reading previous post with commom sense, good day.

Rev's Jackson and Sharpton miss this one? They need the publicity..I gotta say..i wouldn't kill a man on my porch, unless he had a lethal weapon and threatened me...If, however, I found him in my house, that would be an entirely different story..I wouldn't have the slightest problem in protecting myself or my wife...

Beachbum 82103 Would you feel the same way if it were your Father, Brother, Cousin, Uncle ?? Or Boyfriend, Husband if your a female!! No you would not, You would be hurt and wonder why somebody shot them in cold blood. But you didn't know him, you didn't know what he was like as a person, as a father or either you did know him and didn't like him, You should keep your mean comments to yourself, Don't matter how you felt about him he was still a human being that didn't deserve to have his life taken by someone who claims to not know him but did. Now his Family have to suffer, His kids have to suffer, But I serve a powerful God and He knows what happened that night if nobody else does, and I will pray that this Man gets Juctice for what he has done ...... To the Hinson Family I'm sorry about David Jr. he may had a his faults but over all he was a Good Father and Person!!

First off, I am not from the type of family that my father, brother, cousin or uncle would be from. At 5 a.m. they are sleeping so they can get up in an hour and go to work for the day. If this man had a job, he would be too tired to be out at 5 a.m. It's not being mean, it's trying to protect what we own and who we love.

The homeowner should have never opened the door. He should have called 911 instead. Regardless, NC Castle Law will most likely protect the homeowner/shooter and it very well should... Lesson here is don't go snoping around at another persons home especially not on their porch and surely not at night time and certainly not at 5am. I have several motion sensors at and around my home. I know you're out there before you even think of stepping onto my porch. Those who question what happened should ask kennyj09 why they were at this man's home at 5 in the morning. Why was kennyj09's hat and cell phone found under the tree in the man's yard. This man has ZERO priors, not even a moving violation and his home broken into 2 weeks prior. And about children, his grandson was in the home. With handles like j-bird, I see why you are upset new laws hinder you from "providing" for your families. It is sad for everyone and sympanthies go out to this man's family.

I dont know who you are but my hat is on my head and my cell phone is in my pocket. Nobody was with David Jr. that night, the hat that was described to me was the hat David Jr. was wearing on his head that night. And his phone was not found at his home so that was probably David Jr.'s phone that was found. I know where I was at that night, so stop assuming things. Only David Jr. knows what really happened that night because the shooter sure aint going to tell what really happened to cover his own tail.

You seem to know a lot, except for why your friend was 30 miles from home with no ride and no friends with him. Everybody keeps saying this is not who he was, but apparently it was on May 20th. He very well could have made a bad decision that night, but you can't blame the homeowner for protecting himself and his family. I think the loss of life is tremendously sad, but don't blame the man who was home where he was supposed to be at 5 in the morning.

For your information i work 12 hour days 5 days a week to provide for my household and have so for the past twenty three years. That's the problem with the likes of you. You read the covers but nothing in between. I also protected the citizens of this city for 3.5 years by sworn oath. Just because my handle is j-bird doesn't mean i practice crime. I hope your handle doesn't represent your job occupation because your statement on my handle represents how shallow you are.

Sincerly,

Shock to say the lest. My nephew was an over all good person that never deserve to die in cold blood. It was a lie when the article stated that the two didn't know other in fact they had been friends for MANY years. David may have had a past but it was nothing for someone to kill him over. Its funny how the article wants everyone to read about his past but they should have stopped and told about the trigger happy person that thought it was alright to just shoot and then ask questions. I am glad that I don't live in that neighborhood simple because if I was to make a loud noise someone just might want to get trigger happy again. I my only prayer for this person is that you live day in and day out with the vision of this young man falling down on your porch and knowing that he left behind to wonderful children and a host of friends and family that loves him beyond words. May justice have mercy on you before your peers at some point. Will we every know the whole story, no after all dead people can't tell their side. Its a sad time for our family but some how I believe we all find the strength to continue to live and know that David will always be a part of our lives.

Shocked to say the lest. Yea my nephew may have had a past but it was nothing for him to be killed over. It seems to me that someone in that neighborhood is a little trigger happy. If I was living in that area I would be very careful not to make any noises in fear that I they might just get trigger happy again. This young man has been killed in cold blood. I believe that maybe the past of the shooter should have been posted in this article because I am sure it isn't polished perfected. I pray that the happy trigger person lives day in and day out with the vision of my nephew dying and leaving behind two very special children as well a host of friends and family that loved

him beyond words. I am praying that every false word spoken against David will bring forth the truth that occur early Sunday morning and that justice will place happy trigger person at the mercy of thier peers.
