LUMBERTON — An autopsy has confirmed the identity of a body pulled this weekend from a well, and also determined that person died from a gunshot wound.
According to sheriff’s Maj. Anthony Thompson, the autopsy, which was done by the state Medical Examiner’s Office, concluded that the dead person was Bruce Lee Hunt, of 370 Ferenwood Circle, Lumberton. Thompson said that the report showed that Hunt died from a a single gunshot to the head.
Lawmen believed the body was that of Hunt after interviewing Dwayne Wesley Oxendine, 27, of Pine Tree Road, Lumberton, whom Sheriff Kenneth Sealey has said confessed to the murder. Oxendine was charged on Saturday with second-degree murder after telling lawmen where Hunt’s body could be found.
No motive for the murder has been released.
Hunt was 35 years old when he was reported missing on April 26, 2010. His remains were removed from a pipe on Saturday morning that was inside a well near Oxendine’s home that had been sealed with concrete.
Sealey said the 3-year-old murder case stalled when investigators from the Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigations were unable to make any arrests despite having followed several leads. Sealey said that the Sheriff’s Office received a tip after Oxendine recently started telling people he had killed Hunt.
Sealey said that Oxendine was “very emotional” when he was arrested on Friday at a graveyard, where he was found reading a Bible and quoting scripture.
Oxendine remans in in the Robeson County jail under a $50,000 bond. According to the Robeson County jail, Oxendine was charged with a DUI in 2008 and drunk and disruptive behavior in 2009.
Hunt’s criminal history included assault on a female in 2009 and larceny.
