LUMBERTON — A county firefighter has been accused of setting six fires in a wooded area this morning, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

John Bradley Fogleman, 19, of 23rd Street in Lumberton, was charged with six counts of burning woodlands and placed in the Robeson County jail under $3,000 bond.

According to sheriff’s Lt. Brian Duckworth, an arson investigator, Fogleman set six fires in woods off of Lee Britt Road in the East Howellsville area about 6:30 a.m. A school bus driver saw smoke and reported the fires.

Crews extinguished the fires, which were within a few hundred yards of each other and, according to Duckworth, ranged in size from a “car tire … to a couple of automobiles put together.”

“He ultimately confessed … that he was trying to find debris to burn so he could start his fire back up, his bonfire where he camped last night,” Duckworth said. “He walked past a whole lot of stuff that would burn to go to these areas.”

According to a statement from Northwoods Fire Rescue Chief Eddie Cox, Fogleman is a probationary firefighter who has been with the department since October. Cox said he has been suspended pending the completion of an internal investigation.

“Northwoods Fire Rescue Department Inc. does not condone such behavior,” Cox said. “All members of the department are to live by the department’s Code of Ethics. Any violation of these Code of Ethics will be dealt with immediately.”

Fogleman is the third volunteer firefighter charged this year with setting fires.

” … You have a firefighter who set fires, especially young guys, just to get the trucks rolling,” Sheriff Kenneth Sealey said.

A good Leader can lead a horse to water but can not make him drink.. . I think the Northwoods Chief is doing a GREAT job as a leader! I don't understand how u can say Northwoods needs new leadership it just don't seem fair that the chief is having to take all this... U can be the best leader u can be..... But when the leader isn't around he can not be to blame......

THIS YOUNG GENTLEMAN NEEDED GUIDANCE AND LEADERSHIP FROM HIS LEADERS OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT,WHICH HE MUST HAVE NOT GOTTEN OR RECEIVED ,AND HE MUST HAVE MISUNDERSTOOD THE CODE OF ETHICS BECAUSE LEADERSHIP FALLS UNDER THE CODE OF ETHICES ,AND THEY DON'T SEEM TO HAVE BEEN APPLYED HERE SO THE BUCK STARTS WITH THE CHIEF THEN ROLLS DOWN TO HIS OFFICERS SO MAYBE THE DEPARTMENT NEEDS TO LOOK INTO MORE LEADERSHIP.

I normally would agree with most of your comments Leadership but not in this case. My son and daughter-in-law are both members of Northwoods so I have been fortunate enough to watch my kids grow from the great leadership of their Chief. He is a great leader, loves his fire family and wears his heart on his sleeve just as he does for his true family. You should be pointing the finger at the young gentleman and his family in this case. Isn't that where morals and values are instilled in us as kids? Hold the gentleman and his own family responible for his misguided and illegal deeds.

"Leadership 101".... Here's a lesson you will never grasp or understand, simply judging from your statement above. "Leadership" means to lead. It is usually a lot easier with people who are willing. To have to drag someone along because they are resistant, either from ignorance, laziness, or personally motivated agendas is still leadership. However, "WISDOM" is cutting your losses (time and money invested) and moving on.

To say the Leadership of the Fire Department let this young man down, speaks volumes about the character (or lack of) of individuals like yourself. Unless people except some "PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY" for their actions, the Fire Service, Mankind, (feel free to fill in the blank here) will continue to have the same troubles and never make it "OVER THE MOUNTAIN" only to continue walking around it over and over again.

Is the Chief responsible for the personal actions of what this young man did on the night of April 30? YES and NO... This young man represented an organization, whose name was "discredited"... That is (as you like to call it) "starts with the Chief"... (But to correct you sir... "THE BUCK STOPS, IT DOES NOT START WITH THE CHIEF") Were this young mans actions wrong? YES... However this young man, unlike most people, did at least confess to what he had done, without lying to cover up his actions.

"Leadership 101"... It sounds that maybe there is more to your issue than "lack of leadership". If you feel you have a personal grievance with the fire department in question.... Maybe you should contact them... But then again, that may require you to have some "PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY".

Leadership 101.... from your Rantings about "being to quick to judge", I simply reply "The facts speak for themself"... Facts- those are the course of events that ultimately make up the TRUTH.... FICTION- the course of events that a delusional person thinks is the truth....

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.
