LUMBERTON — The Robeson County Association of Black People will hold a summit called “The State of Black Robeson” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the W.H. Knuckles Elementary School at 1520 Martin Luther King Drive.

The mission of the RCABP is to serve as an advocate for the elimination of disparities in health, mental health, education, and the justice system for all under-served populations, according to Pat McRae, the association’s chairman. The association also promotes economic growth and development for minority communities in Southeastern North Carolina.

McRae described Saturday’s summit as the continuation of the association’s inaugural summit held on July 24, 2010, in Fairmont.

“We want to continue educating the public on the issues,” she said.

The summit will have more than 20 informational booths. Those attending the summit will have the chance to: learn about how to lower their property taxes; discuss medications with a pharmacist; have their eyes examined by representatives of the Southeastern Eye Clinic; and get their blood pressure checked by staff from the Dr. A.J. Robinson Clinic.

Prizes will be given away and a cook-out will be held after the program.

Topics to be discussed include the North Carolina judicial system, the North Carolina state budget, and the state of health in North Carolina from the prospective of the General Assembly.

The summit’s keynote speaker will be Laura Gerald, director of the state’s Division of Public Health. Gerald has served as director of public health since early this year.

Other major speakers include: state Sen. Michael Walters, who represents Robeson and Hoke counties; state Sen. Eric Mansfield, of Cumberland County; Judicial District 16-B District Court Judge Judith M. Daniels; and Robeson County Public Defender Angus Thompson II.

Also expected to attend the summit are Courtney Crowder, representing the office of Gov. Bev Perdue; state Rep. Charles Graham, of Robeson County; state Rep. Garland Pierce, whose district includes Robeson, Scotland and Hoke counties; Linda Coleman, candidate for lieutenant governor of North Carolina; and Robeson County Commissioners Jerry Stephens and Hubert Sealey.

For information about the summit, call 910-674-8026.

You are so right. We do sit back and ignore it and why? A girl in my sons class this year said a bunch of white people stole their lawnmower from their yard. If my son would of said that all you know what would of broke out. Racism will never go away due to the black people that continually bring it up wether they know if you are or not. If you do speak up you have to worry about gangs or being harassed. Saying we are a minority here is an understatement. Everything is over run. You cant even go anywhere to enjoy anything because you are always out numbered. You are right we need to start standing up for ourselves. They have as a minority and now its our turn!!

Ross brother I appreciate your comment, how many whites have wondered the samething. We have these other races with their special days but you know as well as I do as soon as white people would make a shirt or signs like that they would be called racists and members of the kkk. We have no rights anymore that's why it kills me. Dont get me wrong there's nothing wrong with blacks having African American month and native Americans having their stuff. I don't care about that but what I do care about is if we were to say white pride or have a special day for whites there would be riots from other races of people but white people can't speakout about those activities. It's unfair for the white class. But Ross you're right its about time that white people stop just sitting back and saying oh we will just overlook this and not speak up. Everyday that white people sit back and not standup for what is right only makes it that much harder for them and especially their grand kids..And just like what I'm saying is from my heart and its how I feel I'm going to be looked on as a racists white person, but others can speakout and SAY WHATEVER THEY WANT TO AND WHITES JUST SIT BACK AND TAKE IT.

The underserved are the whites in this county. They recieve the least amount from government while paying for most of it. They are the true "minority" group in Robeson.

We have the Lumbee homecoming this week, and now this meeting of "black issues",.... I'll be glad when you white folk get some pride in your race and "throw" a little something for yourselves. You deserve it. There I said it, YOU deserve it! Go ahead and explain how the taxes you pay help fund all these other "pride" day/race functions, how a majority of all taxes paid come from whites, a majority of jobs that minorities have are from white owners of businesses... Go ahead, here is a suggestion for a banner or maybe printed on shirts for sale: "White Pride", "Year of the White Man", or maybe "White and Proud"... Ohh, I got those ideas from the pow wow in Pembroke except they used another race so there, it's perfectly ok for you guys to do the same... Have at it, I'll support you. True American, Ross

You better re-think who is a minority in this county! I'm pretty sure the whites are the minority now. What about their rights?

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.

As I read this article then all these comments. I AM DISCUSTED...How dare ANY of you!!!! My brother was a great guy, no one was in the car with him, you didn't offer to drive him nor ride, yet choose to come on here & talk about him in a negative fashion is TOTAL DISRESPECT to all his FAMILY. This story was not about my brother yet about a dealership that was ran into & that is the story the Newspaper has chosen to run. They have that right. But for those of you that feel my brother killed himself? Be for real, if you know Lumberton you know there was NO WAY my brother was doing 90mph hence why there is an investigation. Did my brother like to drink, drive fast on a race track, & have a good time? ABSOLUTLY!!!! & many of you partied with him, then come on here & talk about him. If you have NOTHING positive to say about him KEEP YOUR DARN MOUTH SHUT!!!!! You did not lose a father, son, brother or uncle in this so keep your opinions respectful whether you mean it or not out of RESPECT for my brother, PATRICK LYNN MORGAN!!!!!

I agree with you MadeInBladen. I don't have a problem with them giving money to the communities. Its easy to say what you would do when you're not in that position. Looks like we have a bunch of armchair quarterbacks around here.

Why get rid of the funds, What about the kids who want to play little league and can't afford it? I understand that the commissioners know that it is the taxpayers money and it is going back to the community.
