WILMINGTON — A Red Springs man was sentenced on Tuesday in federal court to 16 years in prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Charles Ronald Locklear Jr., 40, pleaded guilty in March to unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to an indictment, Locklear was found in possession of a .22-caliber rifle on Oct. 2, 2010, when law enforcement responded to a 911 call about disorderly conduct. When officers arrived at Locklear’s home, they found him sitting on his front porch with the gun across his lap.
At that time, Locklear was on supervised release for previous federal convictions, according to the statement.
Locklear has a file with the N.C. Department of Correction that dates back to the 1990s and includes multiple felony convictions.
The case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative that encourages federal, state and local agencies to cooperate in a team effort to fight gun crime, specifically targeting repeat offenders.
