LUMBERTON — Authorities say a woman who was found dead on Saturday in a pasture on Barker Ten Mile Road may have died when she fell from a horse.

“The medical examiner said there is no foul play,” Sheriff Kenneth Sealey said. “We’re treating it as an accidental death.”

Gail O. Gane, 51, of 304 Highland Ave., was found at about 7:45 p.m. in a pasture near the barn where she boarded her horse, Sealey said.

Sealey said Gane was apparently alone at the boarding facility when she went out riding at 4:30 p.m. Bobby Jones, who works at the facility, arrived at about 7 p.m. and saw Gane’s horse grazing outside of the pasture, Sealey said.

Jones put the horse in the barn and then saw Gane lying face-down in the pasture near the road, he said.

“What the evidence points to is that she was out riding the horse, and she fell off the horse,” Sealey said.

Gane’s obituary in today’s The Robesonian says she was a member of the Borderbelt Horseman’s Association and “loved all animals, big and small.”

Gane had served as the clinical director of Respiratory Therapy for Robeson Community College for 10 years. She was a member of the American Association of Respiratory Care, the National Board of Respiratory Care, and the North Carolina Association of Respiratory Educators.

Her husband, Dwight Gane, is co-owner at Pinecrest Country Club and the head golf professional there. Gane and her husband have two sons, Dwight Jr. and Daniel.
