LUMBERTON — A Red Springs man has received a life sentence for a 2008 ambush that involved two other men and left a Fayetteville woman dead, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

The two other men involved in the crime, one of whom faces charges for a separate 2010 murder, will serve at least seven years in prison.

Christopher Lee Locklear, 24, of 980 Dixie Drive in Red Springs, was sentenced on Friday to life without parole after being found guilty of first-degree murder by a jury in the shooting death of Jessica Cahoon.

Cheyenne Dewayne Woods, 22, also of 980 Dixie Drive, and Kenryn McMillan, 29, of 160 Chavis Road in Red Springs, were also charged with first-degree murder but were found guilty of the lesser charges of discharging a weapon into an occupied property and armed robbery.

Woods will serve the two sentences consecutively — at least seven years. He will receive credit for just more than three years he has been in prison. McMillan will serve a minimum of 13 and a half years, less the four years he has been incarcerated.

Cahoon, who was 26, was shot in the head after her Honda Civic was riddled with bullets on Old Red Springs Road about 12:40 p.m. on April 1, 2008, sheriff’s Maj. Howard Branch told The Robesonian. She and her boyfriend, Antonio Locklear, then 23, had just left a birthday celebration for Locklear at his uncle’s house when the attack occurred at a spot about three miles south of Red Springs, Branch said. Locklear was treated and released from Southeastern Regional Medical Center for injuries to his arm.

“They pulled alongside the vehicle in a champagne-colored Cadillac, forced them to stop and … they got out of the vehicle and started shooting,” Branch said.

The jury found Locklear guilty under the felony murder rule, which justifies a first-degree murder charge for any death that occurs during certain felonies; in Locklear’s case, discharging a firearm into an occupied property. He was also found guilty of armed robbery, which added a minimum of four years and three months to his life sentence.

Woods is also facing charges for the April 2, 2010, murder of 32-year-old Roger Dale Chavis, of Shannon. At the time of Chavis’ murder, Woods was out on bail for the shooting that killed Cahoon.

Authorities say Woods and 19-year-old Justin Pevia pulled their black Chrysler up beside ae car in which Chavis was riding and began firing while traveling north on N.C. 71 in Lumber Bridge. The slaying was connected to a drive-by shooting that killed Woods’ mother, Charlene Locklear, and 28-year-old James Earl Hammonds on March 27, 2010.

According to court documents, Locklear’s stepfather and sister were both murdered in separate incidents.

@RossisRight I'm judging your character and the things you say and how you feel about the less fortunate. Look at Jerry Sandusky Educated , rich but molested children for over thirty years, now look at the guy in Denver grew up and raised by educated rich parents and he dud what???? There are plenty more but you over look all of that!! I know one who lives in the oaks and he is one of the biggest suppliers in Robeson of a controlled substance, but white educated and rich folk don't do stuff like that it's just the ones who you feel don't have anything or just don't have as much as you and your rich friends!!! Whatever rich educated people do their dirt they just pay to keep it low profile!!!!!!

@ROSSisRIGHT it really seems that you're wrong here! How can you say the things that you say like you're better than another! It doesn't matter how much more education you have it doesn't make any better than the next man! God has no respect of a person. The word of God say that God dont look at the outer appearance of man but he looks at the heart. I can tell by your comments that you have no heart and that's really sad! Yes some have mad bad decisions in life but that don't make you better than them. That just means that you may have made better decisions than they did!! Praying that God will convict your heart on the way you look at this issue and most importantly your heart and soul!!!!!

Who said anything about "I" was better? But by what you've said now reveals how YOU think of me. YOU think I'm better.... You shouldn't think that way we are all equal... right?

Have you ever heard of a drive-by shooting in the Oaks community?

Where you are right now in life is because of the choices and decisions you have made in your life...

Two people, same age one wealthy the other poor.. which one can probably tell you what happened at the "club" friday night?.... Oh, and successful people do laugh at the poor uneducated loosers around here. We think it's just hilarious how applying a little "want to" will put you on easy street for the rest of your life, but so many choose to party instead. Funny stuff......

I feel sorry for Charlene and Jr, BUT...It is pointless to sit here and blame a man that you have NO proof... That is the reason that Cheyenne is in the situation he is in now... he fail to let the criminal process take place and tried to take the law in his on hands. It may seem that you are not getting justice but some cases take time and I am pretty sure that the Investigator has forgot about this tragedy. But to call out a man who was at another location andmhas proof is going to stir up emotions and get another innocent person hurt. If he is bragging in attempt to make a name for himself ... Then that is ignorant and attempting to commit suicide. Respectfully and Honestly... If Cheyenne wants to truly help... To him to sit down with the investigator and provide a list of ALL the people that he and his partner at the time approached in the same manner he approached Ms Jessica in....

Charlean told me the same day she got killed she was think of calling the bondman and going off Cheyenne bond becouse he was doing the same stuff he was doing befor. How thay had got the Burns boy for 10 pounds of weed and I told the Det the same thing she told me.All im saying is that no mother sould have to die becouse of her son .I know he the reason she in the ground today. And I told him the same thing it not like you going to ever see day light agen so why not tell that you put that boy at gun point and took his weed.I come on here in hopes that some one will read this and some new light will shine on the innocent ones who died in the dark.May the blessing of God be with all who read this and I pray that you never have to face death at your door becouse of your child.Everone know John 3/16 but if you read down a little more it say that men love darkness rather that light becouse there deeds where evil. For everone that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. One day the light will come for us and we will have to give count for our wrong doings. How many people haven't lied to protect someone thay love. How many people have said they where here when thay where there. How easy would have been to get up at 1 or 2 in the morring go do a drive by 10 mile away and be back home befor anyone know your gone.VERY EASY!!!I Pray that the truth comes out and Justice comes for all the family who have suffered becouse of this.

This verdict makes a mockery of the judicial system and displays the lack of education of the Robeson County Jurors. How can you find one guilty and the others not...for the murder, but guilty of the rest. The felony rule that is aknowledged by the state of N.C. clearly states that if the death of the victim occurs during the commission of another felony... then he/she is responsible for the death of the victim. According to the verdicts... they were guilty of robbery and shooting into the vehicle... therefore they are guilty of murder. If they had not planned the robbery... the shooting of the vehicle would not have occurred...therefore her murder would not have occurred...But since planned the robbery together, they should spend life in prison for LIFE together. Hopefully Woods will get life in prison for the SECOND murder that he was charged with. As for McMillan... guess in a few more years he will terrorize the streets of Wakulla and Red Springs when he returns.

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.

A hundred years ago, anyone who might have predicted in 1913 the monumental, man-made catastrophes that would occur in the rest of the 20th century would have been considered warped, if not completely mentally deranged. Who would have believed that the continent of Europe, which had not had a ...
