LUMBERTON — No one was injured when an SUV struck the side of Belk department store in Biggs Park Mall at about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, causing minimal damage, authorities say.
“Some bricks were broken and there’s a large crack that goes almost to the top of the building,” said Chelsea Biggs, manager of the mall. “We’re probably going to have to cut some of the bricks out and repaint.”
Biggs said a contractor was coming to inspect the damage today.
“I’m just glad no one was hurt,” she said.
Kenny Biggs, president of Biggs Park Inc. who at the mall at the time of the accident, said the driver of the BMW X5 drove straight into the building.
“I don’t know if the car malfunctioned or what,” he said.
The accident marks the second time a vehicle has struck the mall in less than a year.
There was no information this morning on who was the driver of the car as the police report was not available.
On Dec. 3, a Mazda crashed through the entrance of Tomlinson’s and came to rest inside the store, causing $4,000 damage. The car’s driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal and hit the glass storefront at 15 mph, according to previous reports.
