Driver sought in fatal accident
by Abbi Overfelt

PEMBROKE — Authorities are looking for a driver who fled on foot after causing a fatal three-car accident early Saturday, leaving behind a car that was reported stolen, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Misty Dawn Sanders, 34, of 3815 Dallas Road, Lumberton, was killed when the Chevrolet struck her 1999 Saturn head-on at about 2:10 a.m. on U.S. 74 near Pembroke, according to the report by Trooper R.D. Terry. A passenger, Dominic Lafonza McCormick, 31, of Orbie Circle in Fayetteville, was treated by paramedics from Robeson County.

The Chevrolet, traveling an estimated 80 mph in the 55-mph zone, struck Sanders’ car after side-swiping a 2004 Oldsmobile driven by 31-year-old Sunshine Marie Hunt, of Cabinet Shop Road in Rowland, according to the report. The Chevrolet had attempted to pass the Oldsmobile and struck the vehicle when re-entering the westbound lane, Hunt said.

Hunt was taken by ambulance to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, where she was treated and released, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The 1994 Chevrolet is registered to Wendy Anderson Chavis, of 1642 Henry Berry Road in Pembroke, 1st Sgt. Ardeen Hunt said. He did not know who reported that the vehicle had been stolen, but said it was reported stolen after the accident.

The Chevrolet and the Saturn were both destroyed; damage to the Oldsmobile was reported at $2,000.

Hunt said that there were no witnesses to the collision, but the Highway Patrol is following up on information as to who may have been driving the 1994 Chevrolet earlier that day.

Anyone with information is asked to call the state Highway Patrol at 910-618-5555. Callers can remain anonymous.

Typical for someone to call a car reported stolen after it was involved in a wreck and the person fled. I hope Ardeen and his troopers can find this person and let Johnson Britt give this family some relief.

Now to the person that fled. Now, you have a felony death by motor vehicle! and Felony hit and run! You ran cause you didn't have a license, had a warrant, was drinking or high off pills? Went from a citation/misdemeanor to prison time. You will get caught. You will go to prison, and you will pay for this one way or another.

I'm a deputy sheriff in another county. When I go home I see so some many traffic violations. Passing in no passing zones, passing at intersections, speeding, and tons other. I get so nervous.

There isn't enough of law enforcement avaliable to deter these drivers from doing these crazy acts. When state cuts, this is what you see. I would advise drives to drive around with helmets on in their cars. Treat it like nascar. Every body down there is in a big hurry.

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.
