PEMBROKE — A Prospect man was sentenced to at least 11 years in prison after being found guilty of setting fire to a relative’s home, according to Robeson County sheriff’s Lt. Brian Duckworth.
A jury found Mabery Locklear, 57, guilty of first-degree arson in the 2006 fire that destroyed the mobile home at 834 Onnie & Joe Road, which belonged to his first cousin and neighbor, 59-year-old Horace Locklear.
According to Duckworth, Mabery Locklear dumped gasoline throughout the home, starting at the bedroom door, where Horace Locklear slept. He continued the gasoline trail to other rooms in the home and then set it on fire. Horace Locklear escaped through awindow.
According to Duckworth, the two were not feuding, although a prior altercation had occurred when Horace Locklear had accused Mabery Locklear of stealing. Duckworth said that Mabery Locklear’s family members testified that they were afraid of him, and described him as a “neighborhood bully.”
Mabery Locklear was released from prison in 1989 after serving 13 years for manslaughter, second-degree kidnapping and common law robbery.
