MAXTON — The body that was found floating in the Lumber River on Saturday has been identified as that of a 70-year-old Maxton man.
But lawmen do not know what killed David Locklear, who lived at Red Hill Mobile Home Park in Maxton, according to sheriff’s Maj. Howard Branch.
“No foul play was found,” Branch said. “But we don’t know who the next of kin is; we have no idea.”
Branch said an identification card was found on him, and Locklear was identified through dental records.
Some people who were fishing near the Alma Road bridge on Saturday saw the body. Investigators believe the body may have been in the water for a couple of weeks. Branch said it is not yet known how the body ended up in the river.
There was never a missing-person report on Locklear, according to Branch. It is believed that Locklear lived alone.
