PEMBROKE — The state will not take back the North Carolina Indian Cultural Center from the nonprofit that has leased the property since the mid-1990s — at least not now.

The legislature adjourned its 2011-12 session Tuesday without granting final approval to a bill sponsored by Rep. Charles Graham that would have broken the state’s lease with the nonprofit N.C. Indian Cultural Center Inc. Although the state will continue to study the issue, the legislature will take no action on the cultural center until at least 2013.

Graham’s bill had passed in the House and in the Senate, with unanimous support in both. But it was returned to the House with a companion bill, and was never voted upon.

According to the Fayetteville Observer, Graham said Tuesday that there were concerns that the state had no money set aside to maintain the property after the lease was terminated. Also, Graham reportedly said the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, which leases from the state the adjoining Riverside Golf Course, was unhappy that the legislation included terminating the golf course lease.

Sen. Michael Walters said this morning that he supported the legislation because there are concerns that the nonprofit is not in compliance with the lease.

“There is no liability insurance (on the property),” Walters said. “That doesn’t comply with the lease.”

Overall, more than 500 acres just west of Pembroke would have been affected. In addition to the adjacent golf course, which is now closed, the cultural center includes an amphitheater, a lake, swimming pool, museum, picnic area with shelters, a ball field, and a nearly completed welcome center.

Graham’s bill was strongly opposed by the nonprofit’s board, whose members point to recent improvements to existing buildings and ongoing construction. Kenneth Preston Hall, the board’s chairman, blames vandalism for many of the problems the nonprofit is having maintaining the property.

Lumbee tribe and its council members have exploited this land to its maximum until these greedy politicians and useless lease holders are throwing in the towel. If people only knew initially what this land was set aside for. It was for a few natives that were absolutely never associated with the glorified mis-print name lumbee

ReedyQlewis... Hey pal, while you were sitting there minding your own business why didn't you fix your own floor and get out of other peoples business/pockets?... That floor belongs to YOU not other TAXPAYERS. You mind yours and take responsability for your own dwelling and I gaurantee you no one who pays taxes will care if you fall through your floor....

Do you know the tribe gets it's money from taxpayers of all races and only "gives" it to just one? Do you see a problem with that? Well, a lot of people do and then the tribe wonders why other races aren't so giddy about their plight. Again, mind your own business which includes your home, and stop allowing someone else to pay for what you are responsible for....

Look here, pal. You're climbing a real slippery slope that you might can't find yourself out of. HIStory tells me one thing, but MYstory tells the truth of the matter. And the truth of the matter is, ALL of it is MY people's land, and everything on it.

You are a guest here, and your priveleges can be easily revoked. So you think you can just continue to take and take and not address past wrongdoings? I don't see nothing wrong with giving a little back from the great amount that we will never get back, and if you are a Native American or otherwise, I encourage you to join in with our brothers and sisters and fight for Recognition Now! This time is so important more than ever before so that we can honor our heritage and the spirits of our elders in a way that will do us proud. God Bless.

ReedyQlewis what in the world are you saying? Native Americans might've been here before anyone but not LUMBEES!!!! What I'm saying is what is a LUMBEE? The way this race is so mixed these times anyone can be a lumbee in RC. If you were a Cherokee or another tribe you could have a point maybe but LUMBEE get real. Everyone in RC is part this or part that these days it's unreal. Now since the Mexicans have come to RC you can't tell if ur Indian or Mexican and it's ur own fault. People want this and that free these days for nothing, get over it I don't owe you anything. And just like the commercial on tv were the Indian company loans money, they loan 10,000.00 for 89.99%interest rate 84 payments for 749.00 amonth...it's government money the begin with and then they rob people with those rates even their own..that is just down right wrong. But back to this story God created this land for everyone and what happened years ago I wasn't here and I don't have anything I had to work for what I have so get over it now.

People have been down here from Raleigh, found out the truth and pulled their support from the bill. Yes, the NCICC does have insurance. If it didn't how did the worker who fell through the lightbooth roof collect a check every week? Just wait until they get the man who sold that land for all those houses and it belongs to the state. Now, that should be funny!

Poor 'Ol Charles Graham looks like somebody pulled his face out about 3 feet and then let go of it. But I'll say this for him: he acted with a lot more common sense at The Big Dance than his buddy G. L. Pridgen.

Percy

Watch how you speak about people... Your words are offensive to me. You are referring to my dad and I think very highly of him. He spends more time in Raleigh busting his butt for these people than he does with his own family. So watch your insults...

I'm not sure what is meant by "The Big Dance". If it is a reference to him participating in the United Way Dancing With the Stars, he said publicly that he was not a dancer. He was asked to participate, was paired with a partner by the draw of a hat, was taught a dance by a professional dance teacher and then did his best. He did it for the community. He has worked hard as a Legislator and is getting much-needed Legislation passed in the NC House for the good of this community.

now before we get too many people making judgements about that million dollars, i say this here: leave the past IN the past. It's gone. No use cryin over spilt milk. If enough inquiring minds wanted to know, and kept up with it, they would know that money was put toward rehabbing houses for people that anybody could have applied and got help with.

Sorry, Hold on ya'll, I'll finish my comment when I get my foot free. It went clear through the floor and I was just sittin here mindin my own business. Wait a second, the tribe told me they fixed that!

I don't blame the state for not wanting to put any more money into the center...what happened to the million dollars that was given to the center before?

I think you need to direct THAT question to Purnee The Pilferer and RoseManure. Of course those two may not know WHERE the money is NOW, but I'd bet they KNOW where it WENT. And they got clean away with it.

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.

Do you think the tax structure in North Carolina should be reformed to reduce income taxes in exchange for higher sales tax and more taxes on services?
