LUMBERTON — A 28-year-old woman was killed and another person injured Wednesday during a head-on crash, according to the state Highway Patrol.
Iasia Mechelle Washington, of Dallas Road in Lumberton, died at the scene, according to a report by Trooper J.T. Locklear.
Washington was driving a 2005 Honda Civic west on Wire Grass Road at about 6:30 a.m. when the vehicle went off the right side of the road, according to the report. The car came back onto the road, crossed the center line and crashed into an eastbound 2010 Toyota Corolla being driven by Elizabeth Dawn Sexton, 23, of Jomar Road in Orrum.
According to the report, Washington’s vehicle exited the road and struck a ditch, where it came to rest. Sexton’s car came to rest in the road.
The two vehicles were each traveling about 50 mph — 5 mph under the posted speed limit — when the collision occurred, according to the report. Both women were wearing seat belts.
Sexton was flown to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, according to the report. Her condition was not available this morning.
No one else was in either vehicle.
