ELIZABETHTOWN — An Orrum man pleaded guilty on Monday in Bladen County Superior Court to involuntary manslaughter in the 2002 poisoning death of his wife.

James Cain, a former Bladen County pastor, will serve three years of supervised probation, according to a statement from the Bladen County District Attorney’s Office. He received a suspended sentence of 16 to 20 months in jail with credit for 57 days that he spent behind bars following his arrest in 2009.

Sixty-year-old Norma Cain died on March 26, 2002, after taking a lethal dose of the narcotic Temazepam, which had been prescribed to James Cain for a “host” of medical problems, according to the statement. The death was originally ruled as a suicide and the case was closed, but investigators re-opened the case when questions about her death arose.

James Cain was investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation and the Bladenboro Police Department for about seven years, according to Assistant District Attorney Tripp Watson, who prosecuted the case. He was indicted by a grand jury in 2009 and charged with first-degree murder, but the case never went to trial, Watson said.

“Obviously it would have been ideal to have this case tried much sooner,” Watson said. “We had to make the decision to make the case based on the evidence that we had. …We adjusted our position from a trial to a plea.”

According to Watson, James Cain provided Tamazapan, as well as insulin, to his wife.

“Both were prescribed to him,” he said. “Neither did she have a prescription for or a medical need for the medicines … he encouraged her to continue to take the medicine and that was the cause of her death, Temazepam poisoning.

“We felt that he had a duty to protect her — and encouraging and providing that medication to her caused him to be criminally negligent and that’s how we arrived at the involuntary manslaughter charge,” he said.

According to her obituary published in The Robesonian, Norma and James Cain lived on Chestnut Street in Bladenboro at the time of her death. She is buried at the Community Baptist Church in Bladenboro and is survived by two daughters and several grandchildren.

“On behalf of the victim’s family and on behalf of our office, we were pleased to see that we could give resolution to the family, at least in the form of an admission from the defendant,” Watson said.

I'm glad that the truth is finally out. I use to work with Mrs. Norma. She was a wonderful lady. Gone to soon. We all knew at work that her husband & new young wife if they are still married had killed Mrs. Norma. Never believed that she killed herself. He should have got more time. But when you can't prove anything. You have to take what you got.

I believe the prison population stats should eliminate the warped thinking of some. Look at those stats.

I am going to state this for the last time. For all the idiots who are trying to stretch this too far. My point is, you can't classify an entire race by the action of some in it's community. I will check the stats on the prison industry, but that doesn't mean anything. I posted the stats, to say. "Although 49.2 percent of child abuse perpertrators are white, it doesn't mean that the entire race is bad". I'm done....Heck, statistics show that more whites are on welfare than blacks, but when certain people mention welfare, they act as if blacks have a monopoly on it.

It was taking you too long. So, I thought I would assist.

Percentage Breakdown of Child Abuse Perpetrators by Race and Ethnicity:

Whites – 49.2 percent

African American – 20.0 percent

Hispanic – 19.0 percent

Asian – 1.1 percent

Native American – 1.1 percent

Pacific Islander – 0.2 percent

.9 percent multiple or decent race

9.4 percent of race not reported

Sorry, but minorities lead in every crime catagory except one, guess? White collar crimes! Just a fact, look it up. You are wrong on your stats above, blacks do lead also in child abductions and rape/incest, but the news media chooses to ignore it when it happens for two reasons. The first is, they want to give minorities something to hang their hat on and be able to say, "see, see, whites do this" and the second one is this,(from a CBS news report on race and ratings) When a black kid is abducted or goes missing, it doesn't generate the ratings as when a white kid goes missing.. Don't get mad at me, Im just stating what was reported by them. That is why it's always some young white girl misssing from college or a white kid being raped by a priest of their father. Blacks do this also, it's just not news worthy in the liberal left wing(your buddies) news organizations. You see, they want to keep minorities as viewers and this is one way they do it, by giving you a little piece that makes you feel good(?). That's what he said. So go ahead and cheer when you see whites missing, it's designed this way, makes you able to say "well, at least we don't rape our kids".... Well, now you know the truth. They do.

Rossisdumb-My point is you can't stereotype an entire race of people, based on the actions of others. Individuals make choices, not race. The heck with your statistics, my point still stands. You can't look at a person skin color, you have to look at the character. @backatya-you are right, I am an idiot for posting my previous comments, but unfortunately I haven't seen you take a stand against others who make comments about those in the Native/African American communities. @Percykution-I know you are going to call it as you see it (most times), but Ross is always stereotyping a race of people by actions of one. Then when the grease gets hot he blames me for stereotyping. Funny. Awaiting stats.

@ROSSisRIGHT,

I'm curious: when you see a Native American and/or African American, do you automatically assume they are 1)drug-dealers/criminals 2) crooks 3) ignorant 4) receiving welfare or have any other negative assumptions about them? I really hope not but from the comments you make, it seems like you do. NO ONE should judge an entire race based on the actions of anyone. This man above is white and murdered his wife. People from all races have committed this crime. People from all races are also successful, educated, and law-abiding citizens. Also remember, the media CHOOSES what to print, not all stories make the news. Just my thought for the day. Goodnight.

Tellingit... You are stereotyping a whole race of people based on acts of a few. You get bent out of shape when I stereotype your race based on the actions of a majority.....7 out of 10.....

Also I'll get back to you soon on stats of this type of crime and YOU won't be happy.

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.

Chris Corbin is a wonderful young man and a true American hero. His dad is a career soldier and his mom is a PSRC teacher. This family deserved to be honored and respected, not victimized by cowards who sneak around at night stealing from a wounded warrior. I have no doubt that the thieves will pay for their crimes, hopefully very soon. Bless you Chris, and thank you for your service and your sacrifice.

As I read this article then all these comments. I AM DISCUSTED...How dare ANY of you!!!! My brother was a great guy, no one was in the car with him, you didn't offer to drive him nor ride, yet choose to come on here & talk about him in a negative fashion is TOTAL DISRESPECT to all his FAMILY. This story was not about my brother yet about a dealership that was ran into & that is the story the Newspaper has chosen to run. They have that right. But for those of you that feel my brother killed himself? Be for real, if you know Lumberton you know there was NO WAY my brother was doing 90mph hence why there is an investigation. Did my brother like to drink, drive fast on a race track, & have a good time? ABSOLUTLY!!!! & many of you partied with him, then come on here & talk about him. If you have NOTHING positive to say about him KEEP YOUR DARN MOUTH SHUT!!!!! You did not lose a father, son, brother or uncle in this so keep your opinions respectful whether you mean it or not out of RESPECT for my brother, PATRICK LYNN MORGAN!!!!!
